Does the mk1 no. 4 handle modern ammunition? I don't want to breech fire a 303 round in my face. It sounds like you guys are shooting it fine. what brand are you shooting, what grain, bullet type?

I was shooting a TON of Sellier and Bellot and it shot fine.  It seemed that the S&B started drying up in the area, so I started reloading.  But to answer your question, yes, it shoots fine.

I think the S&B was 174 grain FMJ.

I've used mainly Remington Cor-loc(sp?) 180 grain.  Though with the increasing cost I'm looking for a something cheaper.  Eric, you say the S&B ammo works fine.  I can get it for $11.60 a box with shipping. Do you think I should go for it?  If it's any good it would sure be better then paying $21.99 a box for Remington ammo.  I've also heard of PMC ammo in .303 but I have no expierence with it.  But to answer the original question: Yes an WEnfield in good condition will handle mordern ammo.

I've seen the future and I don't like it.

Here's a great site for the S&B ammo.

http://www.outdoormarksman.com/index.php?cPath=65_63_39

I was paying about 7.00 a box at the longs up in Auburn, but they don't carry it any longer.

PMC .303 ammo is very nice to use & the brass is very reloadable ! I also (when I'm in the mood to spoil myself) use a Brand called PMX /Highlander ! I prefer using Winchester virgin brass though & starting from scratch

 There's also Remington's UMC ammo , 174gr , FMJ's

For hunting I'll use Winchester Super X , CXP3 , 180gr , SP's that'll hammer a moose .
