I believe I have finally found a color that closely matches the unique red color on my Maltby furniture. I mixed 40 percent Ebony Stain to 60 percent Traditional Cherry Stain. After the stain fully dries, I will start applying the Stand Oil. The cheek riser is Beechwood and got a shade or two darker but, I think it compliments the rest of the furniture. Everything matches and that "Maltby Red" is quite noticeable now. It turned out rather well. I did steam out one very deep dent in the forend but left all the dings, nicks, and scratches alone. ![]() ![]() ![]() ..![]() ![]() ![]() |

Always. I like to use a finger tip and sometimes the palm to work the oil in. I think it helps produce a more consistent flow into the wood...

Is this a second set of wood that you are fitting to your Resistance drop Maltby? Or have you just removed half of the history of the rifle?
Obviously your rifle; so your choice! But personally; these are precious bits of history; so I only use essential maintenance. To maintain the originality and operational integrity.

Zed. This is the original wood. It started drying out and the color started to disappear. I left all the nicks and dents and scratches alone and focused on bringing the color back and then feeding in the Stand Oil. The only items NOT original to the rifle are the buttstock and cheek riser. I plan on shooting this rifle with the scope in place and the cheek riser is necessary for proper alignment with the eye relief.
The original buttstock, cocking piece, rear sight, and King Screw are packed away in a secure place when the time comes that I can no longer shoot. The decades of sitting in a storage facility along with me cleaning it finally took its toll on the forend and handguards. I have been applying Stand Oil in thin layers and the color was fading with each treatment. I used #0000 Steel Wool to clean off the furniture wax and then stained the forend and handguards, nothing more, nothing less. If I am being faulted for maintaining the rifles integrity then so be it. The history of the rifle is still there with where it came from, to where it went with all of its stamps and marking still in tact. By me cleaning the wood and getting rid of 75 plus years of dust and grime unfortunately allowed it to start to dry out. I did what I had to do. "The buttstock in the photo was still wrapped in butcher paper when I purchased it and was drying out as well."

It was the riser on the butt stock that I was concerned about. If it's a spare, then obviously not really a problem.
My Resistance Maltby has had linseed oil for the wood and I decided to do a deep clean of the barrel. The bore scope revealed a lot of old crap in the barrel. Having been shot, then put away for over 70 years. While it could be argued that my cleaning of the barrel is removing historical rust; It is the only way to prevent the rust from continuing to attack the barrel and therefore necessary. From a shooting point of view; it will remain in standard specification. It gets occasional use in Service rifle competition, using charger clips from the same parachutage. (With modern ammunition). It's seems the best way to honour the men and women that carried these rifles.

Phoenix has some very low humidity days throughout the year and combined with triple digit temps for almost 6 months out of the year plays havoc with wood. Even though the rifle sits in an air-conditioned home, the wood is drying out. The original buttstock is turning orange and definitely needs to be slathered in Stand Oil...

Its a closer match for sure. Just remember they didn't do this back then. It easy to over restore.

I think Goosics pictures must have expiry dates, they always seem to fade away after a couple months...
