I've had this 1941 Enfield Savage sport since 1975 stored in a gun safe in Michigan since 1972 when I moved to California. Recently had it shipped out here. I'm starting to show an interest in this rifle again. It's a 5no 4 MK1 serial # CO1507. No US Property markings. Is this an early Savage production model? Thank's for any info. I'm a new member looking to get some answers. If need be I'll try to figure out how to upload some pics.

he!!o and welcome.
Your rifle is a No.4 Mk.I. The 5 in front of the designation is actually a square style capital S for Savage. The Mk.I used a spring latch to secure the bolt head into the bolt rail. A feature that was replaced on the Mk.I* by a different (cheaper, faster to make) method of retention with a simple slot cut out in the rail. The Mk.I was the first production version and is highly sought after by collectors. Your serial number suggests that it was one of the first few thousand produced. Somebody might be able to tell you exactly when in 1941 it was made. Nice find! Everybody here likes Enfields and we do like to see what we are discussing. A lot can be determined by tiny little details. Pics are each worth a thousand words. Humor us and post some pictures. Show us the stamped markings and we might be able to tell you a little bit about the rifle's history. |

savage did not mark the early production mkI rifles with the "US Property" - that came later with the lend lease legalities , they only made a few thousand in 1941 and only made mkIs into 42 , they made 1.25 million rifles from 41-44 ,

IIRC the change over to the Mk1* was early '43 Which coincidentally was also the beginning of Lease/Lend & so U.S. PROPERTY markings.

savage change from mkI to mkI* was at 13Cxxxx = 1942 , they hit 40Cxxxx in 42 , suposedly started using the "US Property" designation in 41 with the 4Cxxxx serial , but ive never seen a mkI with that designation [does not make it so - never say never or always when it comes to enfields]
longbranch change was at 1L8xxx =1942 , they hit 20L in 42 , they made 900.000 by 1945 but continued on into the mid 50s , they changed to Cno4 mkI* designation in 1950 , |

A Square.
My LB is the * dated 1942 with a serial number of 1L5880. Would this be considered a run between the no * and the updated *? The cocking piece is stamped SM as well. I thought Savage only had this style on their early version rifles.

The SM mark is the UK manufacturer "Singer" (of sewing machine fame) so sometime in its life (military or civilian) it had the original cocking-piece replaced with a British made part. Singer used both SM (Singer Manufacturing) and SMC (Singer Manufacturing Co) |

I am actually fully aware of what the SM stands for and who made it. Savage made the cocking piece with only a square S stamped on it for their No4MkI no* prior to their change over to the No4MkI*. I was not aware that Long Branch was using the first variant button style cocking piece as well.

The early model button style cocking pieces stamped with the squared S and LB as well are tough to find in useable condition these days.
