Greetings from central US.  Just picked up a No.4Mk1*.  Also have a No.4 MkT with accessories inherited some time back.  Plan on researching these 2 beauties and learning more about Enfield rifles.  At this juncture I'm thinking I should be checking head space.  Not sure about source of a field gauge.

Welcome from Atlanta GA.  You came to the right place.

A google search will reveal numerous sources of headspace gauges.  If you intend on shooting these rifles, you should get a set. If the bolt closes on the field gage you will need to replace the bolt head with a longer one.  We will help you out with that.

Check the serial number of the bolt to be sure it matches the receiver. If it doesn’t, you will have to check for even bolt lug contact to the receiver.

Numrich is a good source of LE parts.

Make sure you get the correct spec H/S gauges, many are SAAMI & the SAAMI standard will give false "fail" readings.
This is one good source:

Valmont firearms (UK)

Hi they are :

GO –0,064inch

•NO GO –0,068inch

• FIELD –0,074inch

yeah we can post you a set be about £15 shipping £60 for the set

Another is a COIN TYPE Moisin Nagant "Field" gauge, which is coincidentally identical to .303 British.

In a few days I am going to make a NoGo .074 usi g my mini lathe.  It will resemble the Forster field gauge.

IIRC, the SAAMI gages are:

   Go 0.064
NoGo 0.071
Field 0.074 (.01 larger than Go).

Goosic,

Two of the barrels are on rifles, two are spare I purchased from Sarco.  One of the spares is badly pitted and quite worn.  The other looks quite good and it will be a spare in the event the recently acquired LB No. 4 Mk 1/2 needs a barrel change, or swapped out for a 7.62 barrel.
