Well this has been a process. I purchased a barreled receiver 2.5 years ago. Slowly I started to collect parts to assemble a WW1 rifle. My intent was to have this completed prior to November 2018. Well that was not to be. Once I knew that the project was well behind schedule I let it sit for some time. About a year ago I go the bug to complete this rifle. The hunt was on for period correct parts to assemble this rifle. The first thing I learned was that to get all period correct parts was a fools errand. I searched high a low. I called UK. I called NZ twice. After much frustration, I decided that to finish the rifle was the prize in itself. So I abandoned the period correct search and went about getting about finding the best parts to put this rifle together. The final tally yielded a rifle that is a fair representation of a 1917 No1 MKIII*. I did manage to find some NOS parts. Even some NOS wood! The butt stock is NOS. The two upper hand guard wood pieces are NOS. I found some NOS screws, extractor, and barrel band. the rest of the parts were the best parts I could find or obtain.
Lots of hand fitting to get this thing together correctly. All went together well. I could not get the stocks to match color. The lower stock is a reproduction that I purchased from UK. It is beech wood if I recall correctly. I could not get the stain and finish to match. Close enough. Head spaced the bolt and I was good to go. Oddly enough, the hardest part to find was the magazine. I know that their are plenty out there but most are in less than stellar condition. I was looking for a better than average magazine to use. Took me some effort to find one. After all was said and done I was very pleased with the final result. At the range I was pleasantly surprised at the accuracy of the rifle. i was using PPU 150gr SP. all rounds fed flawlessly and extracted without issue. I did not record the target. I was getting a solid 4 MOA at 100 yards. I could easily ring the 200 yard and 300 yard plates at will. I find that the trigger on this rifle to be better than my two other No4 MKI rifles. Would I do this again? Right now? Nope! Maybe in the future a M1917 would be fun but right now I am going to shoot this rifle for a bit. Cheers! Al |

You have a nice result! Putting these together can be a long process but I find it worth it in the end. I am ever so close to finishing a very long project and it has been filled with ups and downs.

Armourer That is a sweet rifle!
Yes Usery is open. They have every other shooting bench open to provide appropriate distance between shooters. It was not very busy. Lots of new shooters trying out their latest purchases.

Nice looking rifle. You did not mention the maker. To find that it on this rifle, it would be letters stamped on the top left rear of the receiver. It would be letters such as SSA or NRF, Different names for the same factory at different times.

SSA & NRF are the only manufacturers to mark in that position. The other manufacturers mark on the Butt-Socket. As there is no manufacturer noted on the Butt socket, it is a fair-bet that it will be either SSA or NRF (which is the same factory just renamed) |
