Hi there,

So i bought an Lee Enfield No4 MK2 today but i am a bit confused about a few numbers on the rifle.

What does the 2/ in front of the screw mean?

Why is there a second screw where the date of manufacturing would be. It has no purpose, it doesn't go true.

Shouldn't serial numbers only contain 4 numbers and not 6?

Thank you in advance for the information.

H.

I too have confused No. 4. The screw looks like it was drilled over the second number which was the year. Mine is 12/53

Also note the action was initially marked as a No 4 Mk 2 and someone had changed the two to a one.

I believe that's a 7.62mm NATO conversion!
Star
Check your chamber!

The shorter 7.62 won't eject with the original .303 Brit screw, its too far back for theshorter case so a second one was added. Its also slightly longer than the .303 one to allow for the rimless 7.62mm case.
You can see where the original made on date " Mo/Yr, 12/##" (has been drilled to insert it. (the "12/" marking on the lower line.)

I think the 1/2 confusion is a mis-stamped left bracket "(" from the "(F)" Fazakerly identifier?

Its easy to tell just remove the floor metal (2 screws) & look up inside. It it's a Mk2 you'll see the "hanging bracket" for the trigger, if its a Mk1 the trigger will come off with it as its hinged in the bottom metal!

that 2 means it was a converted mkI to mk2 configuration , , the trigger should be mounted to the action rather than the trigger guard , an upgrade that is desirable , now - there is some question as to why a contract rifle [the PF serial numbers were almost all contact rifles ] was not made as a mk2 , but i had one made early on that was a mkI converted to mk2 so not o far out of norm as my question might imply , mine was made in 47 , im going to guess this one was an early rifle in that sequence that might have been upgraded before it left the factory as there is no FTR date

my no4 mkI was dated 11/48 and had the PF 5 digit serial number , my no4 mk2 was dated 10/53and had a PF 6 digit serial number , so yes it may well have had that 6 digit from the beginning

oh BTW my 53 mk2 was PF372xxx so yours was made before it but im certain yours was made as a mk2 , they started that in 49 at FAZ  ,

the conversions to 762 were the L8 rifles

As another data point, my 6/50 Mk 2 is PF 212xxx (six digits).

It was converted to a DCRA 7.62 at Long Branch, #590 in 1963-64.
