That is the main reason I do not dink around with my 303B and 308W rounds loaded with 40.0grns of N202. Using the Hodgdon reloading databases when loading for my Faux L8A5T using IMR4064, I am only .5grns over the starting charge weight of 41.2 for my handloads and .5grns over the recommended starting charge weight of 41.5grns when using IMR4895. This also alleviates any unnecessary chamber pressures. It is very much a shame that the Norma line of gun powders have been discontinued however. Especially the N202. It works phenomenally well in both the 303 and 308/7.62 chamberings...

I have the same opinion of 40 gr Varget. When I hit that load I was so impressed with the results I’ve not messed with it since. Same for 40 gr Re15. They just work. And no reason to experiment further.
I’ve got most of an 8 lb jug of N202 left and had done some initial tests last year. 39.0 gave me better accuracy than 40.0 gr. Shot 100-7X in prone with aperture sight with 39.0 gr, group was under 2 MOA. Average of 4 ten shot groups was 2.6 MOA with 39.0 gr and 3.2 MOA with 40.0 gr. Per the Norma reloading website, 39.0 gr N202 with a 174 gr bullet gives a muzzle velocity of 2454 fps. That’s about 50 fps higher than 40.0 gr Varget. That is in line with what I see on the target with MPI differences between those loads. Recording all this data has been very helpful to me. |

This is very useful info. As I have some N202 for testing.
Just don't have the opportunity at present.

Back to the range today to confirm my N140 load. I’m pleased with the results, this load really hammers at 200:
PPU case WLR primer 39.5 gr N140 174 gr Sierra MatchKing 3.06 inches OAL Shot prone in sling at 200 yards on NRA SR Target, Mk 1 aperture sight out my 69L No. 4 Mk 1/3: 10 shot group came in at 3.2 inches extreme spread, 1.6 MOA. 8 of the 10 shots were under 1 MOA. 100-5x score, but with a sight adjustment would have at least been 100-8x. This load performs, going to shoot some matches with it. I also ran thru a CMP Vintage Military 30 round Match course of fire with this load in my 0L Mk 1/2 Long Branch that I bought from A Square 10 (10 rounds each in prone slow, prone rapid and standing slow fire) at 200 yards on the SR target and scored 294-9x (out of 300 possible). That rifle also likes this load. |

That is a great result!
I will have to try that load in my No4 Mk1. I use the same SMK and PPU cases, but have Federal Primers. Not sure if that will make much difference? Although I've probably got a box of Winchester primers left to compare. Just can't get to the 200m range at the moment.

Thanks Zed.
I doubt the primer will have much effect if it is a standard Large Rifle primer. I’m going to repeat one additional test using 38.5 gr; in my first test with 38.5, three of four 10 shot groups did really well (just over 2 MOA). The fourth group poor result might have been me (4 MOA). |
