I've always thought it would be neat to have consecutive numbered milsurps, and if I ever sold for profit sometimes consecutive sets command a small premium. Perhaps the OP is looking for the same?

I had a friend whos uncle had,(actually still has them),a matching pair of M1 Garands. One chambered for the 30-06 and the other for the 7.62mm. One serial number off from the other. Everybody in that family wanted those rifles as soon as he passed away. His will stipulated that he was to be buried with those rifles and a lawyer had to be present to make certain the rifles were those matching Garands as the lid was closed and the coffin was under six feet of dirt.
There were two off duty police officers present the whole time during the funeral proceedings. I was 15 when the man died and I was one of the lucky ones who was fortunate enough to have fired those rifles before he passed away. I was present at the funeral and the most interesting part was watching a bunch of grown men openly crying not for the death of their friend or father for that matter but for the loss of two iconic pieces of military weaponry...

I buried my Grandfather with four jars of shine and without shoes.
He really liked shine and hated shoes.

Sorry for the silence! I really would just like to bring together two consecutive serial rifles together. They would've been separated at least for 30 years since import, if not more. Just would be cool to sorta put them back together, potentially see the different levels of wear and travel over time. I've since gone for a slightly simpler goal in trying to acquire one from each year of production, then going for consecutive. Have 2 49s, a 53, and soon to be 2 55s. I couldn't tell you why I've become so honed in on the No4 Mk2, but I've done this a lot with other hobbies. Just kinda get fixated on something intriguing and go all out on it. And you really start to pick up on the way more subtle manufacturing details lost to time the more data you gather, so to speak

Are you doing this from a collectors standpoint or will you be firing these on a somewhat average basis?

I don't regularly fire them, but I do fire them occasionally. I'm probably voiding some collector's general guidelines in the process , but really I'm just doing this for my own personal enjoyment. If I do fire them, its maybe a box at a time every now and then, if that. For the most part I just keep them clean, well oiled, and safely stored. And not all of them are by any means "collectors", I only have two I'd say solidly fall into that category as far as collector's grade, but all of them are mechanically and functionally as sound as I can make or keep them. My 49s are pretty rough in the stocks, some of the finish is worn in places, but they're still all there and have plenty of life left. I shoot those the most. My 55 and soon to be other 55 are safe queens, so to speak, have only shot one a couple times, partly due to the S stamped stock
