Hi All

serials are pretty much worn off, only real info is a converted sporter No:4 mk 1 and the receiver is a "goldy" colour and marked " 223 rem " on one side and in small letters on the other " england "

year is 1946 ?

serial is M76xxx

magazine PF xxxxx

stainless steel barrel

extractor is different from the 5.56 craig whitsney conversion i have

sorry i dont know how to post photos

any ideas about who made the conversion ?

cheers J

Welcome from Phoenix Arizona.
Without photos of the reciever and butt socket areas and the whole of the rifle itself, there is not alot we can go on here. The PF**** on the magazine just indicates that at one time that magazine was fitted to a rifle  with that exact serial number. Your M76***** is not an original serial number to the rifle if the rifle started life as a No4Mk1. The ENGLAND stamp is just a sold out of service stamp allowing it be placed onto the civilian market.
I know of only one company that made alot of .223 converted rifles using a No4 reciever.  Armalon. They called it the AL42. The definitive way of telling was by the magazine assembly. It was a modified  Ruger Mini-14 magazine assembly. That and they actually made their own recievers.
Again, without photos there is not alot to go on...

Just a small correction, to be allowed to be placed on the UK civilian market the gun had to be prooved and the gun marked with the 'usual' proof marks (2.222", 18.5 tons BNP etc etc).

The "England" stamping is a pre 1968 American import making.

You have alot of parts from different sources on that rifle. I see Long Branch, BSA and a few others. The rifle has been highly sporterized by someone other than a professional.  The scope mount from what I see is a custom homebuilt version.

The mount looks like the old "Indestructible" which as GOOSIC has said is home made from 1/2" (IIRC) Angle iron.

I understand that conversions to 223 were done in Austrailia   after the semi auto ban because  Enfields were plentiful and 225/5.56 is affordable.  This was done by a number of local gunsmiths. Local conditions dictate how practical this is.  Of course some people smith for the fun of it (I know as I restored a Martini and a number of No4 Mk1s)

Hi All
Many thanks for the welcomes and the info

I had assumed it was a custom build, the gold coloured receiver interested me, and the price was good enough for a gamble

And I have an addition to enfields, first rifle i held in the cadets many moons ago .

My previous purchase was a sporterised P-14 in 338 win mag

I would hate to modify an "original" fit enfield, so i buy those already modified

and leave mine as "full mil style "

    cheers J

having had a pile of 223s over the last few decades - none of them bolt guns , im not gonns be much help to this specifically save to say its nice to have one that takes readily available ammo ,
that said , as stated above its been put together from a lot of parts from vintage rifles - and is based on a vintage rifle , no hope to bring it back economically so enjoy it as it is ,
