Welcome to the forum.

The No. 4 rifles left the factory with a black coating, resembling enamel.  Others here will know the technical name for it, but it is no longer available.  Most of the metal was painted black.  Over the years, it may have come off from the exposed areas, or a previous owner attempted to remove it.  The steel was first phosphate treated, and will appear dull gray where paint was removed.

Its one of a series paints from "Suncorite" they all have numbers. Its hard to find now because it was declared a carcinogen.
This is NOT to be confused with the gloppy wall paint the Indians slopped everywhere with a 10" distemper brush Shocked as a rust prevention measure.
Real "Suncorite" is smooth, even & has a semi-gloss appearance.
Don't shoot till you see the whites of their thighs. (Unofficial motto of the Royal Air Force)

there it is - closest thing ive found to resemble it in these times is a stove black applied in a very thin coat ,

isnt it funny that everything good from back then now causes cancer and no longer available ? wonder when liberalism will be found to cause cancer ??????

Welcome to the forum. The No4 Mk1/2 are generally very good rifles.
Please post some photos of your rifle.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!
