Just getting ready to go to the range. I'm taking my No4 Sporter that I had bobbed the barrel and cammoed (I had posted pics of this particular rifle). Swapped the old 4x Weaver for a Leupold 1.5x4 straight tube so I need to site it in. Also, I'm testing a new pill... 174 gr Hornady RN. This rifle has shot 180 Sierra ProHunters well so I'm very curious to see how these group! Current temp... -1 C or about 30 F. Brrr! Just a small taste of what's to come in my part of the country!

A bit disappointed as there was a bunch of cops at the 100 yard range saying they had it booked for the day. So I went to the 25 yd range. A couple of warm ups, a 3 shot group of .46" This rifle has shot good at 100 yards so I suspect it will be my usual 2"ish group. This trip was to get the new scope I put on sighted in and try out those 174 gr Hornady RN, 37 gr H4895. The scope is a Leupold 1.5x4. Next trip will be at 100 yards to verify, then a 10 shot group.

That sounds encouraging.  How close were you with the boresight zeros?

Thanks for reminding me, britrifles! Excellent point. I boresighted spot on @ my 25 yd fence... 1st shot was 4" high @ 25 yards. Quick adjustment and Bob's your uncle! But come to think of it, everytime I use the "fence" bore site, once at the range, I'm usually high (the bullet, not me!) I only use that method to hopefully "get on paper", and it works pretty good.

HT, once you settle on the bullet you intend to hunt with and the estimated muzzle velocity, I can send you the trajectory data for the range zero you desire (distance where point of aim coincides with the mean point of impact of the projectile).   If for example, you want to set the scope for a 200 yard zero, the data will show the bullet impact point (above or below) the line of sight at any distance from muzzle to target.

I’ll need to know the scope height above the bore axis.  A Chrono measurement of bullet velocity would be more accurate, but we can interpolate on the load tables to get an estimate.

If you only have access to a 100 yard range, we can use this data to determine how much above the point of aim the bullet mean point of impact needs to be to give a 200 yard zero.   With a 200 yard zero, I’d expect at most you would be 2 inches high at 120 yards, but this all depends on the variables noted.

Thanks Brit! I am a notorious "aim high" shooter! I know my rifles. I always sight them in for 1" high at 100 yards. (My Enfields). I know that gives me a clean kill shot from 50 - 200 yards, assuming a broadside heart/lung shot. Probably still the same aim point up to 225'ish, which where I hunt, is considered a longer shot. That being said, my brain says when I'm locked in, resting on a stump or tree focused on venision within that range, ALWAYS aim 4-6" higher. I can't count the deer over the last 30 years I've spined... effective, but can waste meat. I do the same with my open sight hunting rifles. I think I'm a pretty good judge of distances, but for some reason...

HT, we’ll get you dialed right in with that rifle, ammo and scope.  Key is not to over compensate at ranges between 75 and 150 yds, just put the reticle where you want to hit, at most you will be 2 inches high in the distances you expect to shoot, but we will have the numbers to confirm this.  It’s tough to judge a 2 inch hold under, so just ignore the trajectory (unless your over 225 yds in which case you will need to hold a bit high).  Your a good shooter and just need to let the rifle do it’s thing and not worry about trajectory.

I just got back from the range. That little bubba'ed, cammoed Sporter never ceases to amaze me. I had sighted it in low @ 25 yards so I was pretty sure I'd be on paper @ 100. I was surprised it was still a little low the first three shot group! Then, of course, I over compensated and was high with the next two. The next two were just touching the top of my 6" paper plate, so I shot three more (my last three!) The five shot group is 1.31" hole to hole, and 3.04" high and 1" left of bull. For me and my hunting, I don't like it that high. The group size? For some reason, this little home bobbed and crowned Enfield is probably my most accurate! To be honest, I think this is my tightest group to date. On the downside, those 174 RN do not feed well so I'll need to do some magazine tweaking. They want to feed high so I suspect tweek the ears down a tad? Next time out, I'll adjust so I'm about 1" high @ 100 yards, kind of my standard with any rifle.

Actually, funny story. I think I walked this forum from when I traded for this rifle. My fault, I got snookered. No4 Mk1 Sporter... after market no drill scope mount (garbage), 3x9 Tasco Pronghorn (good for a .22) and an aftermarket 10 round magazine (garbage). I tweaked that magazine forever to cycle 180 gr ProHunters... could never get it dialed in. Remember back when members discussed making a 10 rounder into a 5'ish? Well, me and buddy measured, cut and mig'ed a nice magazine. More tweeking, still would not work. I put it in the parts bin. I bought an original magazine and it fed spire points flawlessly. When I just switched to RN? Not so much. Long story short... just before I was about to tweek the 10 round original, I popped in the cut down magazine. Works flawlessly with the RN! Who would have thunk?
