Some of you may remember that I had experimented with the 200grn .3105" FMJ rebated BT Lapua D166 bullets with a not too favorable end result,"bullet tumbling and keyholes." There may have been an issue with not enough powder used in this instance, and that being 36.0gr of IMR3031. Since I had no reference point to begin with, I used modern reloading data for the 215grn bullet. The other day brought some enlightenment however. I stumbled upon one sheet of printed paper, dated 1955 that gives specifics on reloading 174 through to 215 grain bullets for the 303B. It is a chart with various powders but I focused mainly on the loads using IMR3031 and as listed:
174/180grn 37-42.5 200/210grn 36.5-41.2 215grn 36-40.8 This paper also gives a Max. CIP piezo pressure reading of (35925psi) for the 200/210grn test load with a muzzle velocity of 1995 fps. My powder meter is set to drop as close to 40.0grns of 3031 as possible. I will load 50 of the D166 and weigh each charge to exactly 40.0grns using my electric scale and trickle charger. I have a bench reserved for Wednesday and my test mule will be my No4Mk1* Long Branch. The bullets will be seated .462" with a AOL of 3.050". I will keep everyone updated as soon as this test is over... |
