I would love to take my Lithgow No1 MkIII* out hunting next year. I am looking for some feedback on an idea I have. My rifle has the PH5a aperture target tight on it. I feel the aperture is too small to be used for hunting. I was giving this rifle some TLC yesterday and thought, "what if I just unscrewed the small aperture eye piece and used the remaining threaded hole as a sort of ghost ring?" Has anybody done this or am I crazy? Thanks!

Your "ghost ring" is roughly the same diameter as the main peep sight on the No4.
Food for thought...

I was aware of the eye piece option, but as I have an arm and a leg invested in this P-H sight already, my thoughts were to shoot it at the range with the small aperture for the summer, then after it's sighted in simply unscrew the current eye piece, perfectly sighted in already. Goosic, after thinking of this idea, I took the calipers out and measured and you are correct! Plus I gain at least an extra foot or so of distance between the front blade sight and the No1 factory notch sight, which I have removed to utilize the P-H. So far, I don't see any downside to the idea...

I customized a Mk1 micrometer sight for use on my 7.62mm converted No5Mk1 by threading the peep sight to accept an adjustable iris or the likes of it. It is also setup with a windage adjustment when the micrometer sight is used.
When I am just out plinking I just revert back to using the main peep sight.

Yes the old "unscrewing the eyepiece trick" works fine.
You could also pick up a spare single hole eyepiece & ream it open for some intermediate sized hole. The one holers are surprisingly inexpensive.

That is a great idea, Shamu. My idea was for an inexpensive (or no expense) result that would/should work. Your idea builds on mine and actually would look more refined.

IIRC P-H threads are the same as Lyman?
That might help.
Also Black powder stores like "Track of the Wolf" might have something.
