I have a Lee Enfield No.1 Mk.3* with G.R.I. and 1944 markings. The Butt stock has some markings that are hard to make out, but appear to maybe be an "SS" type. I know that it was brought back from Germany by my wife's granddad. Any insight would be appreciated. I do plan to take it down and clean it. It has not been properly cared for in many years, but is fully functional and in good condition. I will have to reformat the pictures and upload them later.

Welcome from Atlanta, GA.
Once you post pictures, our members who are knowledgeable on the No. 1 rifle will help you.
There are a few important steps in disassembling the rifle, particularly how to remove the forend and butt stock without causing damage. The forend must be removed before unscrewing the butt stock bolt. Also, do not lift the barreled action out of the forend by separating them at muzzle, you will damage the forend bedding surfaces. Carefully separate them at the receiver, keeping the forend parallel to the barrel. |

Welcome from Paris France.
I look forward to seeing the photos of your rifle. Do you think that this rifle was used by the German's prior to the end of WWII? or am I misunderstanding the interpretation of "SS". I believe that many Lee Enfields were recovered by the German forces at the begining of the war; after Dunkirk. They were used in homefront defense type roles. But obviously your 1944 Ishapore (India) made rifle comes well after that. Sounds like an interesting family history which is always good.

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

It looks a lot like that. Will start looking online to see what it may be. Maybe a unit marking.
