I reloaded some .311 diameter 180 grain Speer RN and took my new to me '43 Longbranch out to the range. (local snowy old logging slash)
I was pleasantly surprised when the groups were right at 2 inches at 60 yds.
Before I shot it, I took it apart carefully and checked the draws for fit, I could see the draws made good contact and the receiver made a good impression on the wood, so I knew it would probably shoot well. The barrel reinforce also showed an impression on the wood, when I took the top wood off, I noticed the barrel was straight in the channel. The barrel is free floated with a slight upward pressure at the muzzle, I'm glad I didn't have to mess with by shimming or any center bedding and that it shot so well. This Longbranch has the full wood set with a grooved hand guard with the magazine showing a matching serial number. |

Good result 303carbine, what was the powder and charge weight? Sounds like you have a good rifle there.

180 grain Speer RNSP, 47 grains of H4350, this load was taken from the Hornady website.

I sent a pic of the AL stamp and serial number on the wrist of my '43 Longbranch to Ian Skennerton.
The AL seems to be an acceptance mark from Albania before it was sold into surplus. My rifle lacks any England or any other import/export marks of any kind. |

Did you post photos of this rifle? I don’t recall. Does it have a 2 groove barrel and the machined Mk 1 rear sight?

I sent the pics on the wrist of my 43 Longbranch to Ian Skennerton, he got back to me a few minutes ago.
He said my Longbranch was a recent import from France and the re-numbering was done there. He also said that it was most likely post war police issue, who would have thought it would have that many stories and mileage over time.
