Rediscovered my No.4 mk1/3 in the back of my safe after years of focus on my rimfire rifles. I used to love reloading and shooting .303 and I hope to start back up again soon. Just checked the prices of Sierra match 174gr bullets and wow! Inflation is real. I still have some Greek and South African surplus (bought years ago) I can shoot in the mean time. Anyway he!!o from sunny California and hope to learn more about accurate Enfield shooting! |

Welcome Berg. I’m an active CMP shooter, particularly like the No. 4 for the Vintage Military Rifle matches. Also M1 and modern military Service Rifle.
My match load is PPU case, WLR primer, 40.0 gr Varget and 174 SMK at 3.05 in OAL. Other recipes work fine too, but I’ve settled on this load as the most consistent performer. And your right, bullet prices have gone way up. Primers only starting to come back, but at 4 to 5 times the price. I saw the first available 1 lb bottle of Varget on line, which will cost you about $50. My plan is to wait it out and live off my own supply until availability comes back and prices drop. The HXP and SA PMP shoots fairly good, it will do fine for you until you can get the reloading components you need. Generally, your handloads will cut the groups in half from the service Mk 7 ammo if you have a good barrel and properly bedded fore-end. |
