I was measuring my buttstocks to see what, if any, variation in lengths I had when, to my delight, I found a stamp (faint but legible) reading "CAS" on the underside of the pistol grip just behind the butt socket. Does anyone know what this signifies? As far as I know, it is the butt which came on the rifle (no FTR markings anywhere I can see).

I checked Jay Curragh's site, but no luck.

I wish I could get a pic of this.  I  have been looking at it again to see if I could be mistaken, but it still looks like "CAS."  Unfortunately, Bubba put some kind of shiny shellac on the wood when he made it a deer rifle, so it isn't as clear as it could be.  I'll try stripping the finish and seeing what turns up.

P.S:  Anybody got any suggestions on that process, as in what to use, like denatured alcohol, mineral spirits, etc?  I'd like to get the shiny stuff off while leaving the rather pleasant reddish finish underneath, if possible.

Avoid anything acidic and caustic. Other solvent are not has harsh on the wood. I would test a small section first to assure that it will not damage the stock. Oil base paints will require mineral spirits, Paint thinner, Lacquer thinner, etc. you can also try commercial finish remover those work very well because there designed for that purpose and contain wood conditioners to protect the wood. If it is latex, tung, linseed base denatured alcohol works extremely well.

Might there be 2 stamps close to each other?
I'm thinking "CA" as one & "S" for short, or the square S for Savage maybe as the other?
I looked on my Savage & there's nothing in that area.

I use citri strip (spelling might be wrong) Orange...nasty smelling stuff made from oranges....does a great job and is no where near as hard core as other strippers. I have used denatured alcohol and mineral spirits on my k98k russian capture to get that orange varnish they put on it off...worked well also..

Well, a guy on another forum replied to this and said he has a short-stock Savage with the same marking in the same place, so I guess I'm reading it right.  Now if I could just find out the meaning.

Sorry, A square, but I don't think you hit it.  From Wikipedia:

"On 2 July 1845 the Corps of Army Schoolmasters was formed, staffed by Warrant Officers and senior non-commissioned officers. On 15 June 1920 it became the Army Educational Corps staffed by commissioned and non-commissioned personnel. On 28 November 1946 it received the "Royal" prefix for its service in the Second World War. From 1962 it was staffed exclusively by commissioned officers."

So, well before WWII, the Corps had already been renamed.  While I admit the acronym sounds plausible, I just don't think that's it.  Besides, can it just be a coincidence that the fellow who said he had the same mark on his rifle also has a Savage with a short stock, one year later than mine?  I appreciate the effort, but I am skeptical.  Until all other possibilities are exhausted, I plan to keep looking.

I didn't mean to seem as if I was ignoring your contribution, I had just looked it up and saw that the Corps had already changed designation by the time frame in question.  I should have been clearer on that.  I apologize.

Yes, they all look the same.  The "S" appears more lightly struck than the other two, but that could be the finish.
