It was a great example of ingenuity when you think about it ...Or a case of these Prisoners really just had too much free time on their hands

I saw a documentary on Colditz 30 years later, or something like that.
They found some POWs from there & some of the guards & had a get together at the castle.
One of the parts was a tour of the castle in it's current restored state.
One of the ex-POWs asked about woodworm problems in the wooden structure of the ancient fortress. The guide, who was not there during WW2, asked the ex-POW what he was talking about as they knew of no woodworm problems. They all went down into the lowest parts of the castle & guess what? Massive woodworm infestation had weakened the old timbers to the point a lot of material needed to be replaced.
When the guide asked the ex-POW how he knew about thhe problem in an area of the castle that visitors never go to & prisoners were barred from it turned out that he'd been collecting woodworm larvae from the bedding wood frames & sneaking out to plant them in the cellars 35 years ago!
Talk about long term planning!

The POW's that worked on the Burma Railway did the same thing with Termites , they'd bury match boxes or the like full of Termites at the Base of the wooden bridge supports ! To me this was a act of supreme bravery! Dave |
