I can see the pics now couldn't at work so I can see the difference in length. I had an S&K mounted on my No5 and I didn't have to shim that one.

As for the cheek piece is that one of the e-gunparts ones? If so I think there in is the problem as those were copied from the SMLE sniper cheek piece not the No4 sniper cheek piece. It sits higher then the No4's do.

As for the S&K mounts you can remove the bolt with out having to mess with the mount.

I live between Chambersburg and Gettysburg so we are not far away. You have a good range down there?

Maybe you should tell Green Mist your secret? He says he can't with his???  Maybe he's doing something not quite right.

Nope, it's a Shamu one Cool I made it myself, based on an engineering drawing of an original.
It may be a little high, but it's just about perfect for the sight height, & it clears the cocking piece for disassembly (just). Maybe I copied the wrong version, but I like it.Thumbs Up

There is a private range in Hagerstown where I'm a member, but it's only 100yds. However I usually get to go to a private shoot in PA several times a year where we can go to 600. That is near Somerset.

Just to chip in on this one again..... my s&K mount fitted as directed on a No4 Mk 1 * (SAVAGE) will not allow removal of the bolt, the wedge nut acting to retain the mount seems to foul, barely though, the bolt.

I'll be picking up a No 5 shortly and will try that one for size. my query was really to check if the problem was related only to the no4mk1* as many other shooters here seem to have no real trouble fitting mounts to the NO4mk2. B
When all else fails, call in the Artillery.

Maybe it's because the Savage made Enfields are just a hair different from Brit made ones?
I had a similar "slight difference" when trying to get a Cad Technik mount onto my Savage.
They have just enough slight differences to be really confusing when getting add-ons.Confused

Pity can't see the pics no more ! I made ,what i think is more or less the same fitting "freehand" and very happy with the result.Fitted an old Bisley scope to it.I must have been very lucky with the precision of the fitting and must say was not very positive when i was on my way to the shooting range.First shot at 25yds under 2" from the bull.Second and third shot in the bull after adjusting the scope.Hundred yds 1" grouping using 174gr PMP Bullets.Rifle is still original but got an offer from a Bud that is going to hand in his rifle to REPLACE THE ORIGINAL STOCK AND WOOD COMPLETE WITH SPORT MADE STOCK  UNFORTUNATELY I'M UNABLE TO KEEP THE ORIGINAL.

AM I DOING THE RIGHT THING ? ( Ask myself that Q )

In South Africa we can't get license for more than 4 weapons any more even if you had the weapons like in my case for 30 yrs because of the new gunlaw !! ( i have to hand in my .22 Hornet single shot, .300 BSA extra long ( Sherwood )single shot ,Shotgun 12 g as well as my Martini Henry 577  !!!! ) if the government get there way to published the new law. Some owners already hand in some of there weapons with no refund ! because they were scared off by Lawmen.Couple of attorneys OF  SA HUNT http://www.sahunters.co.za/national/news.php made a temporarily stop to it to not handing in any weapons for the moment and might be able to keep everthing BUT only if i get granted a special license.
VERY FRUSTATING TIME FOR OUR GUNOWNERS IN SOUTH AFRICA !! WILL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE !
