There's actually skeletal evidence that the many years of constant practice at the butts, Required every Sunday morning by law, thickened the bones, not just built the muscles! Some of those cylindrical English Longbows pulled 100~120Lbs at full draw. Most of the current "Traditional" bows are flat like the American Indian bows & pull much lighter. As for the Warm beer myth, that only happens in bad boozers & cricket match beer tents . Any decent bar has its cellar at about 51℉ & 90+%rH. Cool, but not frozen.

Indeed! At Agincourt in 1415 the archers were described as "short and stocky" and it's historical fact that at least 500 of them were actually Welsh rather than English. The British two fingered salute to the French was also first used at Agincourt when the French said they would cut off the bow fingers of captured archers, probably one of the first uses of free speech! A question please; giving the bird in American parlance, does this have any historical origins or has it always been just an, "up yours" gesture?

We have less tax than you guys? As far as I know it just came over with Italian immigrants who had borrowed it from the old Graco-Roman gesture in Italy. |

Originally the gesture was accompanied with the words, pluck yew, pluck yew meaning, I can still pluck the string on my long bow thereby telling the French I can still fight. Over the years that saying (with the gesture) has become slightly corrupted but in essence still means the same!

I believe the two fingered V gesture , comes from English bowmen .it was a way of saying FU , we still use it in australia so don’t go asking for 2 beers and hold your fingers around the wrong way you might end up in trouble .
I believe the Bird salute was bought around by those that got caught and where missing the index finger. It is also why you see Winston Churchill give the victory sign the palm out way .

No one mention Harvey Smith! I remember one evening, assisted by strong drink there was a discussion on The Princess, down in De (H)Islands about this. Several of the crew voiced a concern that "The Basic Anglo-Saxon gesture" would not be understood by Johhny (foreigner). so we came up with the universal hand insult, equally offensive to as many cultures a possible. I'll see if I can document it somehow on video. I combined the best of English, French, Italian, German & other cultures in one smooth flowing motion (with Fx) Be advised, this will not be Safe For Work. |
