Here's what I did to a mates rifle.  The holes were already drilled and were scew which is why the bases look odd.

I made the rear base so it could be used with the fore-sight.  I also went overboard and keyed, screwed and silver-soldered the rear mount on.  The front one is glued and screwed.  I use 4140 which blues just fine.  And I did it for free!  I milled the rails after mounting so they are about as perfectly aligned with the bore and each other as one can get.  I did botch the front base slightly with a damaged cutter but it only shows up in the blown up photo.  I did it for fun and it was fun.

As you can see, there was nothing to lose.  The rear sight ears were already cut off.  I just tidied the cuts a bit.  What people don't seem to realise is that there is a purpose for those 'ears'.

They are for fitting a carry cord to the rifle!  That clips onto the ring on many back pack straps.  Trust me, it works.  Try it and you'll never bee without one!

You might have 'noticed' the odd looking butt plate - it's for digging into the wet muddy steep banks we Kiwi's have to negotiate in the bush.  It works, even with the shock cord attached to the back pack.

Another view of that shock cord carry.

That scope mount base is made from an alloy bicycle crank and is keyed, screwed and glued on.  It survived the drop test.
