I was lucky enough a few months ago to pick up an Irish Contract No 4 MK2 in new condition.  I had owned one a few years back and was able to get very good accuracy out of it with reloads, using the Sierra 174 grain Match King.  This gun with the same ammo (the guy I sold it to had some left over from the original batch) is not nearly as accurate.  I bought some Prvi Partisan 174 grain ammo and will try it next month at the range and also ordered some of the new Hornady match ammo with their 174 A-Max bullet.  Well see.

In the mean time however I wanted to start looking into what Holland and Holland actually did to the No 4 MK 1 when they built their now famous sniper rifles.  I have not read The British  Sniper by Ian Skennerton, nor have I read Laidler's book on the Enfield sniper rifle.  Do either of these books give details concerning how H&H built the rifles, and if not can any of you point me towards any literature that does?  I'm particularly interested in whether their efforts were anything like what Fulton did when he "regulated" his match rifles.  As a former soldier, Fulton's approach always struck me as match only and not very representative of how a sniper's gun would be modified.

Anyone with some insight out there?

there is a Canadien Military manual on accurizing the No4 rifle. I will try and send you a copy by e-mail.
Regards, Zed.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

I suggest you get Laidler's book, it is about the rifle and setup for military use, along with detailed info on sight/scope adjustment.
Peter also has a lot of HOW TO's on Milsurps, they tell you how to build a No.4 Sniper rifle.
