In Flanders fields the
poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row, We are the Dead. Short
days ago Take up our quarrel
with the foe:
Each item on the table symbolizes
something to honor our missing veterans...

I note of late that more Americans are becoming aware of the "Flanders Poem"..although we still get asked,"Whats that little red flower on your lapel for...?"
FYI, McRrae's home in Guelph, Ontario was designated -years ago-as a National Historic site, and turned into a museum. fitting... Hoadie |

The Flanders poppy has been the symbol or Cenotaph day ever since I can remember in the U.K.

I don't know if its still true but they used to be made in England by veterans who were living in assisted living barracks, many of who were disabled. I don't know if there are enough left to be the source any longer though.

Years ago I heard that as well. Don't think that's the case now, tho.
I know they are machine produced. We go through 10's of thousands every year @ our branch alone. I understand that our poppy tally 3 days ago was in excess of $13,000.Theres a crew going out today to pick up the donation boxes - so that figure will rise sharply. Theres 5 branches in my city alone-so that will translate to ALOT of $$ once the tally is in. Unfortunatley-EVERY cent of it is spoken for Hoadie |

Here the VFW has sold or given away lapel poppies since I can remember; over 35 years that I know of. IDK about the rest of the nation but it's always been a symbol of sacrifice and explained in terms of WWI.
