For all us South African firearm license holders, here are the main points for the purposed amendments to FCA (60 of 2000). Please keep in contact with your representative organisations on how they see the amendments. These are just some of the main points that affect private firearm ownership.
A semi-automatic firearm or shotgun may only be licensed to a person who has held dedicated status as a sports-shooter for a period of at least five years. Why? If you want to shoot in one of these disciplines you basically have to wait 5 years. Only shooters 23 and older will be able to get licenses. Additional motivation as to why any firearm more than four firearms to be registered for dedicated hunting or dedicated sports-shooting must be provided taking into account the needs of the dedicated hunter and sports shooter, the type of firearm required, the shooting disciplines involved in and such motivation must be supported by the relevant hunting association or sports-shooting organisation. Like you don't already have to write a thesis every time you apply or renew a license already. Whenever any firearm licence is renewed or when there is a change in ownership, the original owner must ensure that the firearm is submitted to the Designated Firearms Officer for ballistic sampling of the firearm. Will that be done at the police station or sent away? If sent away how long will it take(remember some people wait 6 months for a license) and will you ever get the firearm back and in what condition? Who pays for the ammo? Would you hand over your brace of H&H shotguns? A competency certificate remains valid for the same period of validity as the licence to which the competency certificate relates, a period of 10 years from the date of issue thereof, unless the competency certificate is terminated or renewed. Did you forget how to use your firearm? Why aren't drivers required to retake their licenses periodically? Especially taxi, bus and hgv drivers. A licence in respect of a percussion-cap-and ball firearm. Next it will be bows and traditional weapons too.

The one thing it appears all gouvernment's forget is that "Criminals" don't need all these rules and regulations to get weapons or use them. So the only people affected as usual are the law abiding sporting shooters.

In the last 2 world wars England and the USA had the benefit of many volunteers being familiar with firearms; due to the popularity of the sport. If they need another call up one day they'll be in deep sh*t! unless you can fight with a, I-phone!!

I just got a strange image in my head I can just see a Drill Instructor yelling at a recruit: " If you don't straighten yourself up right now, I'll unfriend you on Facebook!"

I remember having a "little discussion" with some U.S. guys in the UK on an exchange program on that very topic.
It was interesting, if contentious. Particularly with calling NCO's "Sir" & the "Sir Sandwich". It got quite heated when I asked them if they used the rank twice because it was worth only half as much where they came from! They had me put on a charge (& I let them) & then discovered I out ranked them! BWHAHAHaHahaha. |

well then so am i , i think it has to do with age , and experience , and i once had a US general [retired] confirm upon me the honor of progression in the family , i am now [he left us] "THE OLD CURMUDGEON " he actually dubbed me the "young" as we shared some time with cigars and a nice drink in idaho a good number of years ago , but i wear it well , it fits , i may not have his presence - he was a really neet guy , but ill hold the tittle in this family for a few years ,

It's a bit off topic; but worth the telling! In the Army it's all about the rank; in normal life it's all about who you know! and sometimes the two come together. While working in the Middle East a client who brought his 4x4 in for some work (removing a dead rat from the AC unit) the client was a Captain in the French forces working with the UAE troops (training). Our driver delivered the car, the Captain took the keys and refused to pay. I got a call from the driver at 18.00 hours asking what should he do (he was worried it would be deducted from his salarie) I told him to leave it with me and not to worry. What the captain did not know was that I was on first name terms with the Colonel in charge of French forces, because I'd been repairing an old Rolls Royce that he'd bought. So a quick call to the Colonel. 09.00 next morning the Captain turned up cheque in hand and very apologetic! Still makes me laugh even today!! |
