Are all the Indian nose caps squared like that? I've never seen (or noticed maybe) that before?

Ok , the 2A & 2A1 rifles are all 762 Nato , were made as that and were the last of the 'enfield' type rifles issued in india and probably the last of the SMLE type rifles produced by arsenal facilities , i believe there are some being produced commercialy ,
the 2A and 2A1 rifles differ in the rear sight incrementation , they have a different butt plate than their predecessor the mk3 , which was a traditional 303 , and the box magazine is different as well , although like all enfields they were intended to stay with the rifle loaded from chargers above the bolt as all SMLEs were intended , these are recent imports in terms of milsurps so will all have the importers markings , but i dont believe there have been any real recent imports of these so they have been here for a few years , mine shot well as military rifles - not so well as my charnwood conversion of the no4 - but i digress ..... both traditionally wore the shortened version of the M1907 , a 12" version that the indians squared up the hilt on in its later variants , actually the indians started shortening to 12" even with the mk3 and their 410s , there were three mfgr markings for these [RFI , NWR , and the other i cannot recall without checking references ] and mkII / mkII* variants the first having a false edge the second not , both without fullers , ive oversimplified this to limit confusion starting out , it can get far more complicated .......and theres plenty of time for that ......... these rifles wore the traditional commonwealth slings , the bayonets wore traditional , albeit shortened scabbards , these had fairly short service life compared to other enfield rifles , the FAL replaced them when the indians copied the pattern , besides they needed an SLR in this modern world , these got relegated to 2nd line service quickly in terms of most service rifles , but you still see them in photos from their once in a while , i no longer own my mk3 , 410 , 2A or 2A1 and the bayonets etc - i no longer even have photos of all of these , they went to a young collector i hoped would become as fixated as most of us , im pleased to see you are BTW , they never had the scope , thats an aftermarket sporterized change made in afterlife , but today i use scopes as my eyes fail me

A Square, thanks for the great info. I have not torn it apart yet and looked for all the markings and a good cleaning. I will do that soon as I have a range trip scheduled for the first of the year. I realize the scope does not belong and is not even period correct but, I new it was D&T'd and was looking for a plinker at 300yds or so. My eyes are not that bad yet but, I enjoy scope shooting more than iron sights.
I would like to get a more period correct scope for it (just for looks) so, what do you suggest? I was looking through some for sale ads at "vintage" scopes but, not sure what would look/perform best for this rifle. |

that should serve you well , she is a nice looking setup , there is much more to learn - but im not going to be the source anymore ive forgotten most of what i learmned of these back when i owned mine ,
i wish i had retained my photos but i trusted photobucket and a had a falling out when they made "improvements" that cost me my original account , we have made up - but i lost a lot of my old rifles and bayonets and accouterment photos from the past , i digress ........ enjoy your rifle its a very nice example

Very strong actions these for the 7.62 Nato.
The squared off nosecap came into production while they were still making the No1 Mk 3 in .303, as well as the rear sight with no sides to the sight cap. also I believe not milled for the stacking swivel.
I'll look out the info if I get a minute. R. |

No definite dates for this nosecap, But Skennerton says this style introduced in the war, ...1939-45, and later production.
Wasn't milled for stacking swivel, and also fitted with the "T" rear sight. R.

What sort of groups can you shoot with that? I'm getting tired of my M1930 Mauser and quite fancy either one if these or a P14/17.

Hey flanker..... I haven't shot it for groups yet. I was only able to shoot it at 50yds with ZQi factory ammo. At that range, if I remember correctly, I was shooting a 1.5" group (without actually trying). I'm sure with some accurizing and hand loads, you could get 1 to 2 moa.....which is good for a surplus rifle.
