I have a #5/Mk1 barreled action I am doing a build on. I had quickly noticed that the original serial# has been lined out on the wrist and a new 6 digit # has been heavily stamped just below the old one. The bolt has been ground and a new serial # that matches the action # is also boldly stamped with the same #. Another thing....on the wrist, just below the new serial # are the 3 letters CPJ. The rifle to be is a (F) 1945. Almost mint 5 groove barrel with flash hider/bayo lug intact. All other features of a #5 barreled action are present and correct and not missing. The magazine has no serial#. Anybody know what I have? There is no England stamp anywhere. There are still small remnants of the jungle green paint on the under side of the barrel. There is a little environmental corrosion in places so it looks to me to be an issued rifle that saw service in the Indonesian arena.

It sounds like an Indian refurbish to me, based on that info.
They frequently scrubbed & renumbered when doing them.

No Hoadie, you are next in our group here to get that real #5 bayo. If I find a real one YOU get the message right away. After all, you have seniority on this site, LOL.

The old number looks like L6183 but it is somewhat obscured by the line out.

faz was the one to use the single letter prefix - L in 1945 , BSA only used double letter prefix , unless it is a no4 cut and made to look like a no5
