Hi, I am  a newbie on the site. I just made a trade for a guy and got a No.1 Mk 111, partially sporterized. matching parts original stock new 1 piece forearm. Barrel has been cut to 22in and has a P-H foresight with a 933E blade. Need some advise, does this look like a homemade mod or possible P-H Mod
Thanks, Bob

The PH Front Sight was necessary when they cut the barrels off. I have one and it started out as a #4Mk1* Long branch.

It was changed to a "PH Deluxe Sporter" which was the next one up from the bottom of the line "Standard Sporter"  which was nothing more than having the upper handguard and sight protector removed. I have one of those too.

My theory about the barrel cutoff was that they did it to the guns that had excessive wear to the muzzle from over zealous cleaning.  My Standard gun has a perfect barrel which hasn't been cut. Cutting off 3" got rid of all the offending wear and produced a virtually new barrel.

My Deluxe Sporter got bored out to .35-303 as it had one of the weird 2 groove barrels and didn't shoot all that well. Some do, this one didn't. It came with a one piece Fore End with sling swivels, and the original buttstock.  All the wood was stained a nearly purple color and still looks good but I replaced it with Boyd's Gray Laminate which looks and fits better.

These guns were the inexpensive P/H "Sporters" and were sold as working guns for the everyday guy in the late 50's and 60's.  They are, or can be made into, good shooters.

As far as a pure hunting rifle goes, they are as good or better than anything out there and the reliability of the Lee Enfield action is second to none. I like mine!

They are also great guns to get into and refinish which I did on my Standard Sporter I paid $200 for.
