I recently picked up an Enfield L59A1 and saw a picture somewhere of one with a bayonet also marked "DP". What is different about these ? The picture was small but it looked like a standard spike.

Never heard of a Drill Purpose Bayonet, but we are talking Enfields so anything is possible. My best guess is that it has some defect that would prevent it from being issued for combat and got earmarked for drill purpose or it was just marked that way to go with drill purpose rifles

Some years ago at a New Your show I saw a P07 with a blunt tip marked DP.

Strange..any time I've seen a "DP" designation..it has been stamped into the furniture.
This appears to be like tape-wrapped. Someone here will no doubt enlighten us. |

The "DP" on my L59A1 is a painted white stripe with the "DP" stenciled on. It does have a stamped "DP" on one side of the magazine. As for the bayonet, I have no idea.....

i guess with the scabbard attached it would serve as a DP bayonet , the mkI scabbard has a ball on its end that could function so , ive never heard of one welded to the bayonet - sure its not just stuck or rusted on ? this is totally new to me

Same here..... The "welded on" bit is just speculation on my part. I'm trying to find out why the bayonet in the picture is Marked "DP" on a white background just like the rifle. Surely just sliding on a scabbard wouldn't be enough justification to mark it as a Drill Purpose item. |
