I just got back from the range testing out some PPU 150 gr FMJBT's. Had some loaded with 40 grs of H4895 and some with 41 grs. The good news... no keyholing! The 41 grs outshot the 40's, 1.57" vs 1.74" at 100 yards. Bad news? The 174 gr FMJBT outshot both of those. Granted, they were different rifles, but similar platforms. Full length barrel, walnut cheek piece and 1.5x4 Leupolds. I'm sure there is a lesson here, just not sure what!

There's probably a good reason that the british military loaded 174 grain bullets.
Maybe you've just rediscovered why!

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

Yup. While I don't have a crono, by the book the speed of the 150 was about 2425 ft/sec, the 174 about 2300, so speed, or lack of, isn't the main culprit. I suspect the longer 174 projectile was more flew more true. To add to this, the rifle I shot the 150's out of has been sited in with 150 gr ProHunters, same powder load as the 150 FMJ. That round performed much better. Kinda glad I only bought 100 of the 150's!

If you want to see something interesting, take the bullet in the photo and load it with 37.0 grains of your powder on top of a 303B case with a Magnum primer as ignition. It will buzz out of the Enfield at roughly 2440 fps. A three shot group can be accomplished to look like one 45 caliber shot. You of course have to have pretty decent rifling on the Enfield. It is only this bullet that will give you the desired MOA...

Don't forget the Hornady 174Gr FMJ-BT for the Nagat (if you can find em, grab em.) |
