I suppose it depends on if you just want information for maintaing the rifle or an in depth encyclopedia of the brand. The top author is probably Ian Skennerton.
He has written a major work called "The Lee Enfield" ; which is probably more information than you will need. It's very big read! He has also written small buyer's guides and maintenance pamphlets. They are all very useful.
There are other authors; but I don't have their books so can't comment on those.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

I like the older books, written as the stuff was happening. I see many "Modern Experts" who are well thought of, who contradict stuff I remember being there!
(yes I'm that ancient)
Are you looking for historical, or technical works?

Well I typed out a reply last night then a blip happened and lost everything then wife called Dinner time so I now getting back to this.
Don't need the History of how it was used here there etc. Like to know more about the markings etc.
Like I think that I was able to figure out that BSA which is stamped on the one side of one of the Enfields I posted pics of stands for Boy Scouts of America and the GRI on the other stands for Grand Republic of Ireland on the other, or not. Things like that. More about which type is which type and pics of them. At this time I don't need to know the technical side as to how much pressure the breach can take or very technical things like that. General info on the type of Enfields.

"the lee enfield" is the bible , but if all you want is info on markings and parts changes you can get fairly good info from straatons vol 1- mkI & III rifle or vol 2 for the no 4 & 5 rifles , Vol 3 covers the long lees and their conversions , Vol 4 covers the pattern 1914 and Model 1917 rifles [emphasis on the first - ferrises book does the rest on the M17 ] and vol 5 covers the trials rifles and special purpose , not sure if he got around to one on the trainers specifically but i would enjoy it if he did - christmas is coming ???/

The small Buyer's Guide booklet by Ian Skennerton has quite a lot of useful info; to help identify what your buying or looking at. It's not expensive either; could be a good place to start.

Well called a friend of mine the other day on this and he said that anything by Skennerton would be good. Of course I think he just wants me to see a few pics of his rifles that are in Skennerton's books. That said If got a gun show in two weeks and f I sell enough stuff I'll have to buy one of the above books. Need to know about the MG42 or it's Lafette or 1919a4's talk to me as I might know a few things. A lot more than Enfields, at this point in time anyway.
Thanks for the input.
