I have a question. Why are the majority of rifles different armies used during WW2 full wood stocks? Does anyone know the thought process behind that? Thanks!

Bayonet fighting!
Really. Its hard to handle a really hot barrel, so they encased them in wood. Its also the reason for the "stripes" in No4 Handguards. those grooved cuts are called "Grasping grooves" & they act like checkering in wet, muddy trench fighting.
Don't shoot till you see the whites of their thighs. (Unofficial motto of the Royal Air Force)

Thanks, Shamu! Never thought of that. Once again, I learn something new everyday from this site.

In the WWI diary of Harry Drinkwater; he tells of a particularly hard fire fight that he had one time; on night watch I believe. The Enfield barrels got so hot that he and his colleagues kept swapping rifles to let them cool because they were getting too hot to hold.
He ended up on a charge because later on parade he did not have the rifle he was issued with!
His story is well worth a read. One of the few diarists who went continued writing through out the war.
It was strictly forbidden to keep a diary; he was lucky to survive, as well as not get caught writing the diary!
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!
