With the centenary of the Armistice rapidly approaching, perhaps it is an appropriate time to record an experience of my father's shortly before the First World War ended. As a boy I remembering him mentioning the incident and I found this among his papers following his death. |

Very nice read, Terry, and Very nice you have this document!
Also very nice you had a father, as you nearly didn't! An old acquaintance of mine carried a bullet in the bottom of his heart, from 1916 until he died in I believe 1982. Got it on the Somme. Went through his arm, dog -tag attached to his braces, broke a rib and lodged in his heart. He had X-rays showing it. Bert Hartley was a gamekeeper from Thurlby, bottom of Sutton Bank. Could walk the legs off you! Thanks again for this Terry. Richard.

I've read a lot about the fighting/living conditions of WW1. Only a true sense of duty and love of country would keep the brave personnel in the trenches. God bless...

All 3 where brothers but un aware of each other as enlisted in 3 different states of Australia.
