I think I stumbled upon an acceptable finish for older rifle barrels other than bluing. I redo a lot of gunstocks (mostly for friends, mostly for free). Over the past few years they've asked if I could re blue the barrels. I have using Oxy, but since it was usually on a "around the block Cooey or Savage) it does take time. I waited a year to mention my simple fix as I wanted to see how it held up to a farm truck behind the seat rifle. It's been a year, and still looks good! I used Rust-Oleum High temp BBQ paint. Matte finish. Just used steel wool and WD40 to take surface rust off. Wiped down with brake cleaner, hung from the garage roof and sprayed. Made sure I got good coverage. I let it cure over night then wiped with a soft flannel cloth. The matte turned into a dark glossy faux bluing colour. Very durable and when obseved by the friends, they couldn't tell the difference from a real blueing job. Hope this helps for the small projects!

Is that the "7777" cat No?
That's the one I use. It really mimics the original Suncorite very well.

Got the can right in front of me. Rust-Oleum Specialty High Heat. Tough protective enamel. Got a picture of a BBQ on the label.
