Ok, I’m new here and new to the Enfield No.1 Mk III* in particular so be gentle!!Im not new to firearms in general and have read (and watched) a good bit about the free float characteristics of the barrel on this rifle. It is a BSA 1917. I’ve not shot it yet but I did the paper test along the length of the barrel and it is free float from the rear to just about the inner barrel band (the piece that fits around the barrel but below the hand guard). The paper will not slide all the way forward to the inner band. When past that band about 2 inches moving toward the muzzle it starts back sliding and goes all the way to the rear nosecap screw. Sooo, if I loosen the inner band bolt and release a little tension on the barrel pushing down into the stock, I can get paper to slide all the way from the rear to the inner band and then starting on the other side of the inner band, I can get paper to slide all the way forward to the rear nosecap screw. MY QUESTION IS: how tight should the inner band screw be, loose enough to free float the paper test all the way to the band itself or tightened down where the paper can not reach the band when sliding down the barrel..say one or one half inches away it stops?
I sure hope this is a clear question. Sorry for the length. Ed

The screw must be tight. If your barrel is binding then relieve the barrel channel enough so it can be tightened. Yes you can "relieve the tension by backing the screw off a 1/2 turn, but its not the right way to fix the problem.

Thanks all. I’ve basically been fact checking what I’ve heard. Not knowing the history of the rifle or it’s accuracy, I am just trying to see how it’s setup and if its correct with everything I’ve researched. I’m pretty much of an accuracy nerd and figure that if I know it’s supposed to be set up, I can get it there. May take a few bullets and time but playing with old guns is fun! Cheers!

There should be @7lbs of up pressure applied to that screw or what ever the armorer determined it needed for its best accuracy, how it was measured idk some special tool I`m sure.
