I am totally confident the .303 will make anything you hit well have second thoughts about attacking you, I will say that my 8mm mauser will not let you have a first thought let alone a second!! (not blasphemy, my enfields outnumber my mausers about 4 to 1!!)

Dave, Agreed an excellent round, only draw back it is slightly faster the HV MK VII Military rounds and you must allow for this when using iron sights

Stupid question, My Ishy's came with 12 round mags and I bought a 10 rounder. I've thought of plugging a new mag to the 5 legal limit for my area.  Are the, for example No.4 MkI and the other originals, convertable to 5 round mags with out hurting or altering the firearm?  Please bear with me as I have never even handled anything but the Ishapores so I don't even know if the original 303 Enfields have detachable mags or are like the Mosin and SkS's.  For large white tail deer in the 150 to 220 lb range is there a commercial grade 150 +/- to 180 grain SP? What would you guys recommend? thanks
Jim

Dave H and Cookie Monster, thanks for the response. My rifle is right on at 100 yards with the battle sight and the load, so I'm set. I'll be using it within 100 yards on bear, mountain lion etc ONLY IF they decide to be a problem. I'll use 150gr FMJs from Golden West for targets and plinking.

2ajim, all the SMLE's have a detachable magazine. If you have another magazine (not the original one for your rifle) go ahead and plug or modify it as needed. There might be places that sell 5-round magazines for your rifle as well.

There are commercial 5 round MAGAZINES available, but they are dear, & seem to be relativly rare.
Here -In Canada - The Lee Enfield rifle is SPECIFICALLY exempt from the magazine laws.(Most people don't take the time to find that out) So many of the MAGAZINES have been rivetted to only accept 5 rounds.
Personally-I don't like that beacause it ruins the value & look of the RIFLE. It seems to work alright(I have a No4Mk1 like that) My M-42 is like that as well.
Shop around. You SHOULD be able to access a 5 rounder somewhere.

Make sure its for the round you will shoot, I tride using my Ishy .308 mag with .303 rounds in my Yellow muzzle MK 111 it wont work and it will mess up your .308 mag.
Hey hoadie , Im going to have check out my Mag regs down here.  or do what i did last year and go with out the mag.
Kinda how I found out .303 doesnt fit in a .308 Mag...

I had to do some "adjusting" with my magazine to feed the 150gr loads.
I guess I'll stick to one basic load to avoid feeding problems should a bear or puma take exception to my presence. Ying%20Yang

Smokey there has been some improving the .303 British into what they call the .303 British Ackley Improved. They reduce the taper and increase the shoulder thus increasing case capacity. You can the use higher quantities of a slower burning powder thus reduced pressures and increasing the velocity

Being a rimmed cartridge, I expect factory ammo would be safe as well in the 303 British Ackley Improved. I haven't thought of modifying the rifle though; I expect my full-power loads would do the job. How much does the chamber mod usually cost?
