I recently bought this A.J.Parker No 9 rear sight. Its mechanically very nice but cosmetically challenged, particularly the bluing. The chewed screws are being replaced by the seller. Here's my plan. Dismantle & de grease, Soak in Evap-o-rust overnight, This will remove all rust & all bluing. Rinse well dry with hot hair dryer. I'm thinking of buffing the bright surfaces with very fine abrasives too. Now I'm thinking of bluing the parts that were originally dark-colored, but I'm wondering about oil blackening after reading your posts on the subject. I have a toaster oven which I'm planning on using for heating & then oil quenching, Its plenty big enough for small parts like this in fact I bought it for just such a purpose! I have a few questions if I may. Do you see any horrible pitfall I've missed out? Can I use new synthetic oil or must it be petroleum based, must it be used? My main concern is retaining the spring nature of the rear part. I have both liquid & paste type cold bluing chemicals as well, so I could do a combination if needed. |

My thoughts are it should be regular oil as I'm guessing that process uses the carbon in the oil.

Also, would you polish up the shiny part with the numbers?

I'm thinking I might. It will depend on how deply the numbers are cut down. The Evap-o-rust leaves a nice grayish tone so I'm going to see how well it goes. My thoughts are blue the main casting, the rear spring, the knobs & their shafts (That will include the eyepiece, not shown, & leave the rest not "in the white" but close to it as that was the original setup. Maybe depending on the numbers blue them & polish it back somewhat to leave the numbers blackened but with a silver/grey background. There seems to be some pitting there so I'll look more closely when it arrives.
