The Interior Department announced that it will be using the $78,333 given to them by President Trump to revitalize an important Civil War landmark, according to the Washington Times.
Earlier this year, Trump promised to donate his salary to various projects and organizations. He previously presented a check to Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke in April, directing that the funds be used by the National Park Service. Zinke said he would be using the funds to renovate Maryland's Antietam National Battlefield, a few miles outside Harper's Ferry, W.V. Antietam, known in the South as the Battle of Sharpsburg, took place in September 1862 and was the bloodiest single day in the entire war. |

Well, that's GREAT news!!
Been to Sharpsburg many times. You can FEEL the gravity of the "sunken road". First time there - my friend (who was @ VMI at the time) brought this new toy(GPS) he borrowed from the AF.(He was working summer for the USAF) On a fly-over mapping sortie for the Parks service, he found 3 large graves (from 30,000 ft!!) previously unknown, & lost/buried over time. From the positions, it was easy to tell which side they were fighting for. If ya want the whole story - PM me. |

I'm just 10 minutes from Antietam. He's right you can feel it there & at the bridge too. Why the he!! they fought over it escapes me completely Antietam creek is only about 6" deep! All they had to do was go upstream or downstream & walk across. The redoubt above the end made that place a killing field!
They're also using funds from Pres. Trump's donation to fix the aqueduct & C&O canal right here in town. Bloody lane (sepiad for effect) Antietam creek & Burnside bridge |

Man..bin there - dun that.
Back in MY day..when we did the re-enactments, everything was stressed on authenticity. No women in the ranks, proper arms, proper uniforms-such as the southern boys had @ that time.(That meant many were also barefoot.)etc.NO tents (Cept upper officers)Small company steet fire for cooking..most rations hardtack & goobers etc. Those were good re-enactments. My "special" moment didn't happen there..it was @ the "Mule Shoe". I miss those days & the people that made it so special. I hear now that they are trying to get a re-union of the remaining 22nd Va Inf Batt. going. I hope it works out. too many have passed, I want 2 C the last of the best, again. |

ive visited multiple times myself , and yes , you can feel it , more so than some of the others , so clear to see and i was pleased because it seemed 6to be lacking in attention , although im not sure that might be 'why' you feel it so much ,
came back to add a thought id had a bit ago - with all this BS of tearing down civil war monuments for people that apparently have no connection at all with history , i felt this an exceptional use of trumps presidential salary , he does not need it and i applaud his wise use of funding , ill probably not be very civil to those that dare broach the conversation of our civil war monuments on the wrong side of my thinking , it has nothing to do with my southern roots , long before i knew of them , growing up in the north , i had a respect for all that participated in that era , i attribute that to my grandfather who was always respectful and reverent to those that fought on both sides - he was an amature historian who loved that time period of this country ,

Apparently - it is the most studied war in history.
It was also was the biggest "game changer" for how wars were fought: Aerial warfare, trench warfare, submarine warfare, breech-loading rifles, the machine gun etc etc. It was also the last conflict wherby general officers took part in combat. |
