I have been told that some Enfields used for target shooting have "heavy" barrels, now not being familiar with this particular style of rifle, I'm going to ask what may seem to be some odd questions.
Does anyone have one of these "heavy" barrels, either on a rifle or not, and could they measure the barrel diameter at about the 24" mark? Now I'm looking to buy one of these heavy barrels if one is for sale, but I would prefer a shot out one as I intend having it re-bored to a larger calibre and fit it to an LSA No.1 action that I have recently picked up. I am trying to buy one in the States and have a cousin who lives there send it to be re-bored and then on to me. As stupid as it sounds, it is still way cheaper this way than buying a new barrel here in Oz..... ![]() Roger |

Im aware of two “heavy” barrels for the LE’s. The target barrel for the No. 1 rifle that is equivalent in weight of the No. 4 rifle (2 lbs 6 oz). So, not really a “heavy” barrel, but thicker than the No.1 barrel. The other is the 7.62 heavy barrel (about 4 lbs) used in the L39, L42, Envoy and Enforcer.

years ago I was told you could mate a Browning MG barrel to an Enfield action.
These used to be available but are now rare so useless advice, sorry. The 5 groove BREN bore from Long Branch was I think incorporated into all Long Branch barrels after maybe 1949? This sort of supports the MG barrel idea. I think an Enfield with a big heavy barrel would also look good. |

Does anyone here have a Lithgow H or No.4 barrel that they could measure for me ?
All I need is the dia. at 24" and the dia. at the start of the taper at the action end after the knox and the small radius. Roger |

I've not heard that about an Enfield action, however here in the states a number of 1919 (and likely 1917 Water Cool) barrels were screwed on some 1903 actions, I've seen a few that were left in the original diameter, and some that were tapered just a bit, not sure why, 03 and 03A3 barrels were never in that short a supply

The taper on my No4 is 1.100" +- .001" I can only give you a measurement at the 22" mark on the No4 barrel, which is .635" +- .001" the bayonet lugs are at the 24 inch mark on a No4
