It's local product Allan! The 54 is the manufacure date, the 7
indicates the Mk 7 174 grn 2440fps load and the MP is Small Arms
Ammunition Factory No 1, Footscray, Melbourne. (from the
harringtonmuseum.org.uk) Probably cordite.

You lads were joking about hearing loss in the earlier postings. Have any of you used a sound moderator? We found a legal loophole here in the uk and the police allow us to use them under the Health and Safety act passed here ( or is it hear?) years ago. Basically the police are scared of shooters suing the ass off them for refusing to let us use moderators and some bright lawyer ripping into them for compensation for loss of hearing. Obviously laws differ from country to country but its worth a try if you feel strongly enough about it. Tony. |

Tony, here in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia, our gun safety laws
are based on how scary a gun looks, not it's actual potential. Sooo..
you can own 20 SKS's and 10,000 rounds of ammo as long as they don't
have grenade launchers or hand grips. We all know that mass murderers
and criminals really like grenade launchers and use them often.
They banned the 50 BMG rifles ( even single shots) because they are big, shoot a long distance and have a really scary big bullet. Since they are 5' long, they are easy to hide under a coat. Any type of suppressor that screws onto the barrel would be "bad guy" stuff, and therefore, scary. Ed |

Thanks for that info Ed. Your bad guys must wear awful long coats to hide a 50 BMG.
Its sad that the uninformed can have such an influence over the authorities and get our hobby restricted so much. All the shooters I know wouldn't harm a fly, in fact they've been great with my family. I'm a single dad and the guys from the shooting club took my kids under their collective wings and made it possible for us enjoy ourselves. Shame the non shooters can't be as helpful.

Allens a Chicken! .....Allens a Chicken!
Hey this is why we have Mother in laws ! Their a living crash test
dummy for suspect ammo! Look I've got a couple of really suspect
enfields laying round the place ! Take one of these ....one mother
inlaw ....suspect ammo ......lay on a barbee, a few cold ones, Few
mates ,set her ....Rifle & ammo up at a safe distance & put her
to work ! This can lead to hours of entertainment & great financial
gain if you run a book on how many rounds before it goes
up in a blaze of Glory.........Or the whole thing gives up
the ghost on the first shot ! Or in the gravest extreme (God forbid )
Their all duds .....No small explostion ! No goodbye Mother
,No Money from the bets ! And your mates give you the
hiding of your life for not giving them the entertainment they
came for ! Dave |

For those of us who separated from M.E. long ago and no longer speak
english, I researched this "sussies". As it refers to a belt like
object with supporting clips, I believe Dave, Tony and Allan are
referring to those canvas pouches that hold loaded Enfield chargers.
However, I am unsure why Dave H's Mother-in-law would wear them?
![]() Tony, most of the people I have met shooting have been normal well balanced folks. The old guys at the range are so happy to see kids show up to learn to shoot, they spoil them terribly. Ed |

You got that right Ed. Most of the guys I shoot with are Scousers ( from liverpool) with a great sense of humour and they realise the kids are the future shooters. Unfortunately the guys aren't into enfields as such and tend to shoot the new Steyrs and other fancy toys fitted with huge scopes. Great you can drop them all in near enough the same hole but where's the skill in it ? If the scope gets knocked they're screwed. Interesting to learn that enfield had a works at Fazakerly during the war I live about 40 miles from there after moving over to the nw from sheffield. Somewhere in the bits I salvaged from the move are pics of huge gun barrels forged at Firth Vickers in sheffield for WW1 battleships. There may also be some pics of the drop hammers and lathes they used in WW2 to make the crankshafts for the spitfire engines. One of the reasons sheffield was flattened during the war. I was born in 1948 and remember as a kid the burned out buildings and piles of rubble still left over from the blitz. If anybody is interested I'll try and find them and post them on here. Before anybody comments on my age my birth certifcate is on Parchment not a stone tablet.
