bench rest stuff , ive been slowly building on this for a bit , i want to shoot a couple that ive had in my collection for a bit [the 22cal collection is one of two i still have - the other is my cowboy guns] im not ready to give up either so im going to shoot them some ,
i shoot the cowboy stuff enough that ill enjoy them a little longer , i can plink at the range with them as well , , \the 22s are a different story as they are all over the board accumulation of most anything you can imagine , a lot sit in the cabinet most of the time , i have a few that should be shooters in bench rest type competition , but im a novice at that so it will be a learning experience to say the least , im plannoing to shoot my enfields in that equipment as well , just to see what they can do , eliminate the human element as much as possible , they always shot well for me , this may end up as an exercise in testing rifles in the end but im spending a little to find out , some stuff i have some i dont ill not be stupid in it but ill go as far as i think is fun for me , the one thing im looking att yet is ammo - there needs to be some understanding of what is worth buying as i know there are a lot of options and a lot of money =can get spent there

Each.22 seems to h it's own preference, when it comes to ammunition.
It's not always the expensive stuff. CCI shoots as well as the Eley Edge, but the Eley is 3 times the price.

i was thinking that as well based on past experience - i have a remington 66 that shoots as well with cheap bulk remington thunderbolts as it does with the expensive stuff , ill start small and work my way up - i do have a couple nice rifles that should shoot well when i find their favored ammo

.22 ammo accuracy seems to really depend on the rifle. What shoots really well in one rifle might not be the best in the other. Best thing to do is buy a 50 round box of what you can get your hands on and test them. Then buy bulk of the type that shoots best.
I’ve been thinking of getting a Remington M40 single shot .22 target rifle the CMP is selling. |

They all have their own preferences, for sure. My BSA Sht .22 IV* puts 5 CCI Standard Velocity Target into 3/8" at 50 yards while my LSA Sht .22 IV puts the same ammunition into 3/4" at the same distance. Both were shot at an indoor range from a Lead Sled the only difference was that I mounted a PH5A sight on the BSA while the Canadian stamped LSA has a Cooey 10A rear sight. I haven't been able to replicate either rifle's accuracy with any other manufacturer's ammunition to date but I keep looking.

The CCI is very good value for money. I chrono'd them in summer and found they were slower than expected. Plus some more variation in the velocity, when compared to the Eley Edge (which is 3x the price). However you can weigh the CCI and exclude extreme errors if you buy a brick of 500.
I do need to do more testing with the 1918 SMLE. Rather than go full bench rest, which will be a disadvantage compared to the modern bench .22's. But the leisure bench style of competition is really fun. Basically it's a 100m Bench target shot at 50 metres, for .22 rifles with scope (not compulsory) shot from the sitting position using a front sand bag or a bipod. The target has one test roundel and five of competition. 4 shots on each of the 5 targets for score, 200 maximum. Number of test shots is free, but all shots need to be completed within 20 minutes. No wind flags or pointers, so look at the grass. It's a good way of getting new members into a fun competition, with a wide choice of rifles.

My .22 Enfield absolutely loves that Soviet Biathlon ammo, but my .22 Martini hates it. Best thing to do is meet up with some buddies for a .22 range day where everyone can try out various ammo in various rifles. Easiest way to do it, best use of a day. Did that last weekend, shootin soda cans at 160-200 meters way out on the mesa.
