I just picked up an eight pound can of IMR-3031. I really like this powder. Works very well in my M1 garand 30-06 and my .303 loadings. I also have a few nice loads in 5.56 NATO using it. It is an excellent all around powder. I also have some good luck using IMR-4320

Thats one of my favorite loads for the .303, I love those bullets....only drawback is $$$$$$..... they are a little spendy. I am enjoying Varget a lot lately....just have to be extra exact with measuring....had a little expanding case situation, all better now!! I checked out Varget because it works great in my 22-250.

Thanks for sharing. I'm just beginning to reload and information like this is very helpful. Spent last Saturday afternoon building a bench in my basement. Got the press mounted and I'm in the process of acquiring the tools I need. This will give me something to occupy the long winter nights.

If my poor warped mind is working correctly 3031 dates to WWI and was developed to load 303 MK VII ball for British contracts it  (if my poor warped mind is working correctly) was "303 powder #1" originally. So it should work well in 303 loads.  Those 168 gr Sierras are great but many 303 rifles have issues with boatails.

The 174 sierra is a great round for the 303 brit. We developed a load using Vit 140 and the sierra heads and to be honest we can't find anything to match up to them for accuracy.

IMR3031 work great with moderate loads, burns slowly and consistently for paper-punching. I've used it in nearly all my rifles for target practice. 36gr with the Hornady 150gr softpoint is pretty accurate, and easy on the rifle and shooter.

Smokey works very well in all my hunting loads. Have not had one lost or walk away yet using IMR3031. And would feel comfortable shooting 500 yards with my hunting rounds. Made a 340yard last year with excellent penetration and expansion. Of course using Nosler Bullets helps.

I weigh all my projectiles. Nosler is always exactly 150gr for a 150gr round. All the other I have tested are off +/- .5 grains. I have had Sierra’s off up to a grain and a half even in the match grade bullets.

Hey Cookie, what manual is that data out of?
Not that I disbelieve its accuracy but

I was on the IMR site and Downloaded the Hodgdon manual
there is only 2 listings I could find for that powder
1 for 150gr Hdy SP  41.0gr
1 for 180gr Sierra SP  38.3gr

And My Speer Manual only has one listing
and its for a 100gr plinker with 44.0 gr max

I like others on here favour this powder and its characteristics, and it strikes me as odd that there isn't more listings for it with how popular a propellant it is

Diver,

I looked in my Hodgdon manual, Humm For some reason the only powders they list is Hodgdon?? Go figure Cry. It however is in the Sierra, Hornady, and Speer loading manuals I have. All have data on the IMR-3031 powder for .303 British. The Speer is the tenth edition, the Hornady is the third edition and the Sierra is the 2nd edition. I also find loading in a 2008 free courtesy manual put out by IMR, Winchester, and Hodgdon.
If you would like I can scan or copy those pages and send them to you.
