if you click the "Post Reply" button, (lower left of the last post) instead of the "Quick reply" panel you will find a picture icon. That will lead you to the attaching pictures bit! Just make sure they are not too big.

That is one very poorly rifle with structural parts missing.

The holes in the action are where the charger bridge should be mounted - this has two functions :

1) To support the chargers whilst loading
2) To provide strength to the action and stop the two sides 'spreading' during firing / recoil.

The 'back-plate' (as you call it) is not original to the rifle and was fitted 'aftermarket' to either give a little extra LoP or to soften the 'kick'.

If you have not fired that rifle yet,do not fire it. That rifle is missing all the safety pieces and that bolt assembly is rusted including the bolt head.

The magazine has been "sporterized" to hold less than the original 10 rounds and by all appearances is a blind permanent box.   The release is missing.

That's a tie-it-to-a-tire-and-shoot-from-behind-a-tree-with-a-50-ft-rope-to-the-trigger first shot piece, there.

After you get the safety replaced and a gunsmith once-over.  And, as A Square 10 warned - replace that stripper arch.  It's not listed as a part at Numrich Arms so it might be tough.

I usually just get my wife to shoot the first round while I sit in the truck.

Without seeing the exact markings on the RH side of the butt socket I cannot give you the detail of the exact model number, but in principle, It WAS a Lee Enfield No1 MK3 (of some variation) commonly called the "SMLE" (Short Magazine Lee Enfield)

The charger-bridge is not normally available as a spare part (it was riveted or welded & once fitted it would never be removed) so the only way you will find one would be someone scrapping a rifle - but, it is unlikely that anyone is going to be scrapping a rifle in worse condition than that one is.

There is too much missing and too much rust to make it a viable restoration.

Unless you have all the necessary parts in your 'spares bin' accumulated from years of buying and selling it will cost many more $100's to source parts than it would to buy a complete 'as used in WW1' Lee Enfield.

I would say that it is not worth spending any money on it, rub it down and use it as a wall hanger, or use it in the garden as a 'tomato spike'.

Hang it on the wall and go find yourself a nice original to shoot.
They are great rifles.
