Got to shoot a really nice Lithgow & a #5 & I didn't even take an Enfield to the range!Star

Great shooting day & maybe a new member on here if I played it right. story:

Took the metric FAL to the 200 yd range because I want a real 200yd zero. Met a bunch of guys at the 100 yd range, which is also the 200 yd range so I went to ask them how long they were planning on shooting there as (for obvious reasons you can't shoot 200 when all the 100yd points are taken) they were at 100 yds.

We got talking & they were going to back up in an hour or so so we took the dog to the pet store & returned.

I'm setting up & the topic of Enfields pops up because on of them is shooting an Enfield musket. His buddy has a Lithgow #1 MkIII, and a #5!ClapClapClap

Well I got to shoot both & kind of generally futz with the #1. (Small confession) I'm a #4 guy I've never fired a #1Embarrassed. I have heard how the balance is nicer & so on but this was my first real test drive of a #1 & a Lithgow at that. I guess I started with a bang!

It does balance better than a #4, but I just can't get used to the sights! every time I shouldered it I had no front sight. I had to slowly bring the muzzle up till it appeared & then find a sight picture, but it was sweet, very sweet.

The #5 was nice too, nowhere as bad for recoil as I've been told. The 45-70 Trapdoor Springfield was nice too, as was the Enfield musket.

Of course I didn't get anything done on my actual program so I have to suffer & go back tomorrow! Oh well time to take a hit for the team & suffer through it manfully I guess.Big smile

I only had five hours of range time today. Shot my MAS at 200 and my 22 at 100  It is an exceptional 22.
Have a Nice Day
If already having a nice day please disregard

I have all kinds of trouble with the small thin #1 front sight. Sometimes the best results come when I find my range to the left or right of the bull and then pull it over to center. British target have the btm of the bull in white and the top half in black and it really helps. Or print up some #14's but the range nanny won't let me put them up at Laguna Seca anymore.

Not PC #14

I just tape, or staple a sheet of computer paper across the bottom 1/2. Makes a great tin hat target. just pull it off to score!

I'm working on it, even if slowly.

I have fired the #5 before, but I never actually owned one. I guess at heart I'm more of a shooter than a collector, once I get one of something I look for something different.

I never did understand the "harsh recoil" of the #5, it does kick a bit more than a #$, but nowhere as bad as the FR7/8 or Nagant does.

Cold, the range is in a valley that looks down to the open sea so the wind picks up speed as the valley narrows to the shooting points. By noon it's blowing real strong.

my oppinion is the bark of the #5 makes folks imagine the extra bite , i do not note any more discomfort than the no4 nor the no1
