I just picked up another Enfield today it is a No.4 Mk.1 Savage. I have been eyeing a friends Enfield for some time now. He owes me a $150 American dollars. I was at his house this evening and he asked me would I take the Enfield and call it even. I told him yes!! And it would stay in the family. it a very low serial Number in the 9000 range in very good condidtion. I will keep you guys updated on my findings.

I was cleaning her up, took a peek down the barrel, she is an old two groover, Grooves and lands are in excellent shape. I have shot this weapon before when my friend still had it, she was extreamly accurate.

Nice find. A few quick question’s: Is it one of the early No.4Mk1 with no star (*)? Does it have a bolt release behind the charger bridge? Or does it have the bolt release slot just back from the chamber? Is it Full wood?

The serial numbers for Savage manufactured No.4’s should be on the butt socket below the safety about half way to the trigger guard. It should also have a “C” within the first 2 to 3 digits (i.e. 11C1111). I have seen a ’42 Savage rifle (NO *) with the serial number 11C63xx.

Based on the information so far I suspect your rifle MAY have been renumbered.

Does the rifle have any FTR marks? Where on the rifle is the serial number? Does it have a year of manufacture? Got a photo or 2?

#4Mk1(T)

After looking closer at the serial Number it reads as 0C09XXX. Also on the top edge of the receiver US Property is stamped. I'm still cleaning and finding stampings. If needed I can PM you with the last three digits of the serial. As far as FTR marks the "S" on the reciever stamped as "S no.4 mk.I" On the end of the barrel between the bayonnet lug and the muzzle these markings are stamped   C.A.I.  SI. ALB. VI.

                                                                             US. 303B         &n bsp;         &n bsp;

Thanks for you information.

Now that explains things. Your rifle was made in mid 1944 near the end of production. Savage started serial numbering their rifles with a number prefix (i.e. 0 through 99), The letter code (“C”) and then a 4 digit number following. When they got to 99C9999 they simply started over at 0 and had a 5 digit number following (I.E. 0C00001). Yours falls into this serial number range. Your in good company as there was less than 6000 Savage No.4’s built with the 5 digit following number.

C.A.I. SI. ALB. VI. Is the import mark for Century Arms International.

US. 303B is of course the caliber

The rest looks like commercial British proof marks

Hope this helps
