   Looking over my little collection I started wondering.  If I were to use one of these in actual combat,which one would I use and why. I weighed everyone and it did not take long for me to make my decision. Point of aim with bayonet fixed came in to play as well. [ FYI: A complete front sight assembly for a No4 weighs 3.0 ounces.  The front sight assembly with the stamped front sight protector weighs 2.0 ounces.]
Anyways, it would bode well using the lightest bayonet possible while fixed to the rifle,in my opinion.  Of all the bayonets I have, the No4 MkI weighs  in at the lightest at 6.75 ounces, the heaviest being the No7MkI/L at 12.75 ounces.
 This is my list:
No4 MkI  6.75 oz  Singer Manufactured 
No4 MkII  7.25 oz "                                 "
No4 MkII N67 7.75 oz "                          "
No4 MkII Savage  8.00 oz
No4 MkII* 8.25 oz
No4 MkIII 7.25 oz

I know it does not matter any longer but, it seems that THEY should have just kept making the Cruciform instead of switching to different forms. Again,just an observation...

	There was a movie, back in the 60's IIRC. It was about "the Boffins", the back room technical branch who invented new "stuff" for the troops. It was "The Back Room Boys" or something similar. There was a running gag where these to odd, obscure engineers kept showing up with a new "universal" bayonet prototype. Every time they appeared there was another new feature & it ended up looking like a Swiss Army knife. The lead character finally just looses it with them both & bellows: "Has it dawned on you two that the average "Tommy" only uses the bloody thing for opening tins of bully beef"?

	You start off with this beautifully crafted bayonet and then,to speed up production, you eliminate the best part. The next few years you watch as the bayonet becomes an amalgamation of bits welded to each other. Around mid 1945 someone comes up with the brilliant idea to create a Swiss Army Knife combination fighting knife bayonet combo that is as complex to work as it was to make. It then is used for parade purposes only. A few years farther down the line another person comes about with an idea to take a square chunk of steel and pin a blade to it. Funny how it works out that the original design would have sufficiently supplied the end user with what it was intended to do. Minus the opening of a tin of beef of course...

	It was an interesting evolution for sure. From what I've heard the squaddies hated the spikes, simply because they were not an actual "blade". That's why they kept the blade design from the No9 for the No7/L. They even kept it for the later L1A1 Ess Ell Arr one!

	they got the blade back with the No9 but no handle! so still not great; if the only way to open a tin of beans is to have the blade attached to the rifle!
