Well, I finally did it. I went and found a rifle I liked and bought my first gun.
I got a Enfield No4 Mk1 yeasterday from a local gun shop.

Got it home today and cleaned it, feeling really good now and I'm loving her. She's been pretty well scrubbed and the only thing I can figure out is that the gun was imported by Century Arms in St. Albus, Vermont.
I think at some point she was in Fazakerly but thats just a hunch.
Gun is in good order, despite being sanitized, will make a wonderful shooter when I get some 303.

Anyway my issue is that the oiler cover on the brass buttplate has no resistance to at all. The trapdoor falls open with gravity.
Is there anything to fix it? It really doesn't cause any problems but is rather annoying and ugly. I took off the buttplate while cleaning just to look at it and don't see anything abnormal but then again if something was missing I wouldn't know.
Other side of the trapdoor does have an "F" stamp on it if thats interesting for anyone.
But I'd rather be able to fix this then taping it shut or buying a new buttplate.

Any help is appreciated, thanks guys.

Trap door spring is either broke or missing.
Easy to fix not sure but ebay or Numrich would be your best bet for finding one.

If you would like to know which plant built your rifle simply supply us with the serial number that should either be stamped or electro stenciled on the left/flatside of the reciever or, on the left side of the wrist socket.
The trap door sounds like it is missing the spring or is broken as stated earlier. Numrich Gun Parts, Dixiegunworks, Apex Gun Parts are just a few places that have that item. If in a few days you still cannot locate one, PM me...

Here’s all the photos I took the day I got it, before cleaning it off.
Went on Apex and found the spring and some other things. Thanks for your help everyone!

Found the issue.

Screw that held the spring against the trapdoor is broken, spring was still inside the gun. No need to order a new spring and have a screw coming from a friend.
Thank you for all your help
Heres some pictures of the buttplate removed, and where I found the spring

Meadow Chief. Just curious here and you do not have to supply the complete serial number if you do not want to.
(After the letter prefix, does the serial number start with a 1 or a 2 or a 3 and, does the serial number on the bolt handle match the serial number on the reciever?)

Shamu can maybe help out here but that screw can also be used elsewhere on the rifle. I can't remember where, but I had misplaced one (ejector screw, safety maybe) and was looking for one and a post member mentioned it.

Its a 4BA thread, very much used in various lengths & heads. Rear trigger guard screw & foresight guard screw are the same thread, so are magazine catch bolt, extractor retaining screw, striker locking screw & Ejector retaining screw, but not sure of lengths.
