Howdy Folks!
New member here ![]() Looking for info on a project rifle I just won at auction that I wanted to save. Its a No 1 Mk 1*** enfield that unfortunately received the bubba treatment. I was wondering how interchangeable are parts from the Mk 1*** and the Mk 3 for the sake of availability? |

welcome , you picked a tough one here to return to original , i know a number of folks that have been seeking out needed bits for decades , to answer your question ....yes , a lot of parts were used in updating the mkI to mkIII and its very common to see a mkI version with those parts , some of the upgrades over the years ended up as a "star" this rifle started as a mkI the * was added as ir was improved or brought to standards over the service period ,
one of the very first questions i would ask is what have you got ? -is the backsight original [they have bone inserts at the adjustment assembly] -is the bolt head original ? [these have an appendage that creates the right half of the charging bridge -i suspect you will say the fotrestock is cut ? [these had volley sights and a distinctive bayonet boss as well as a distinct rear handguard ] -is the buttstock original ? [they had the marking disc and were slightly different that the mkIII] i have photos of the bits but ill hod off till you indicate what you have to start with , but .........these bits are really hard to find , you will work hard and pay dearly for your progress , i say this not to talk you out of it but only to prepare you , there are folks that started and have some of wgat you may need that will part with the bits because their frustration has reached its peak , good luck in your efforts , looking forward to seeing what you have and hearing how it goes ,

I'd say if you want to return it to a Mk1*** (it is not a No1 Mk***) then I think you are going to struggle and be very dissapointed.
If you want to Make it a Mk1*** / No1 MkIII bitsa, then yes it can be done - not easily - or cheaply but it can be done. You will either need to have good woodworking and engineering skills, or very deep pockets. The bands and screws are in different places between the Mk1 and the No1 MkIII, so it may be better to try and splice 'bits' of the No1 MkIII forend onto what you have left. If you are needing the sliding charger / cover or bolt head - you will be very unlikely to be successful, there are dozens of folks in front of you just waiting to pounce. Post some picture of what you have and lets see what you need.

Approval from where? I don't see any posts awaiting approval, unless it was approved after you looked & before I did? Your link works for me! 9:44pm EST on 2/11.

Nice find Based on what I could see in the auction pictures, you got what looks like the nice rifle with all the good bits save the nose cap, cut off, and wood. Nose caps are not that hard to come by just be advised that Mk1 and MkIII are a little different. Mk1 cut offs the same, they are available and not terribly priced. New wood can be had from Prestigious wooden stocks, not badly priced. The bolt head charger thingy may be a bit tough to acquire, but at least you`ve got most of the good stuff already. Good luck and enjoy your new project, half the fun is the treasure hunt

I just got a nose cap from ebay (bit rough but only minor surface rust). The hard part will be the Clip guide thing that attaches to the bolt head. I'll probably put out an add for one when I get enough points, but that is a ways off.

Now that the nose cap is on the way, will mk 3 screws suffice for it? Or do I need Mk 1 Screws for it?

because of the time that has passed and the changes that occurred you could get away with that but to be correct you need the right ones , particularly on that nosecap ,
