The only thing I would do to that rifle is install a Mk 1 micrometer rear sight. Very nice rifle indeed.

I love how your dad put the reduced peep hole over the original peep sight/ghost ring. Lends a bit more of your dad's persona into the equation when considering to modify it to your wants or desires in the future. When you hold it and sight it on something, you are in essence seeing what your dad saw. When you shoot it you feel the same energy your father felt from its recoil. Resolve to leave it as is and  cherish it for what it is worth, a memory of your dad...

Awesome looking rifle! I would leave as is, but it's your rifle.

Goosic,

Thank you for the kind words regarding my Lee-Enfield. I have put some not insignificant work into it.
Was missing the forearm end cap and had a heavy coat of a high gloss lacquer (not attractive) on the stock(s) when I received it. Meticulously applied blue painters tape to protect all the metal and recoil pad and stripped the old lacquer finish off. Cut and shaped a new spacer from basswood for the forearm to cap and cut, shaped and fit the new forearm cap from ebony wood. Carefully painted the edges of the basswood spacer with several coats of white acrylic paint and sealed with polyurethane. Finish sanded the stock(s) and new ebony forearm cap and finished with several passes of boiled linseed oil, rubbing out between coats.

After refinishing the wood, I cleaned all the metal which was already quite nice from the original sporterization work. Added the Tourbon leather sling after completion of the refinishing.
I am pleased with the results.

A picture of the magazine floorplate installed. I do not know what became of the original 10 round magazine.

Regards,

Jeff T.

A square10,

I do not know whom my Father had sporterise the rifle, so I cannot tell you if the magazine floorplate was custom made. The fit to the trigger guard is quite precise. I know there were manufacturers who made magazine floorplates for sporterising Lee-Enfields, as they were referenced in the American Rifleman reprint of the The .303 Lee-Enfield article I mentioned in an earlier post. However the article did not name specific manufacturers. I can post the PDF file of the American Rifleman reprint if you would like to see it. It was originally published in 1957. Please let me know.
A couple of different views of my rifle's magazine floor plate below.

Is there an internal magazine under the floor plate? I’ve not see that before in a LE.

Britrifles,

Yes, there is an internal magazine which holds five rounds, I have not loaded it since completing the refinishing, but, if memory serves me right, believe it holds four rounds with one in the chamber. Looking for ward to warmer weather and going to the range and seeing what kind of groups I can shoot off the bench with the 'battlefield' sights.

me either and i was wondering the same , it looks like someone made a custom version of the M1903 plate - but its extremely well done , appears the trigger guard might be integral from what i see in these photos ,but i may be wrong here , do show us how all this fits up to the rifle , thats a very interesting custom bit of the classic spirting heritage ,

Remember it will probably shoot high.
Its hard to tell with the modified rear sight but originally it would be set for 300 yds, but its possible its been corrected with the add on aperture.
Look at the front of the rear sight, if the new aperture is lower than center thats probably why to get a more realistic zero!

Hi Jeff T from Geoff C in Chicago.  Welcome to the forum - your rifle looks like a beaut.  Really good condition.  you should be very proud especially considering its provenance.  That's what these rifles are all about - the untold stories of 50-70-100 years of history!  Enjoy!

Thanks Geoff C,

The Lee-Enfield is quite nice, my Father and then I put some work into making it look as nice as it does.
It is in excellent condition mechanically as well. Trusting it will shoot accordingly.
I grew up in the Chicago suburbs, Glen Ellyn. My Dad was a long time member of the Aurora Sportsmen club in which I have great memories of shooting with him. He especially loved trap shooting.

Its a great looking rifle..hats off to you & your father.
I have - until now - seen or even heard of a Lee Enfield with a floorplate like that.
Nice to see the labour of love that goes into these old girls!
