I just acquired my first Enfield rifle, a BSA No 4 made in 1942. Serial # Q3943. 5 land and groove barrel with about half of its life left. The rifle has a #3 bolt head installed. It closes on a NO-GO gauge. My gunsmith happen to have another No 4 in his shop that had a #1 bolt head. We replaced my #3 with the #1 and it wouldn't close in the NO-GO! This made no sense until I read a terrific post on this forum by Alan de Enfield. It seems #3s are not always bigger that #2s, or #2s longer than #1s. It appears the length of a #3 is not consistent across manufacturers of Enfield No 4s. I put the #3 back on my rifle and fired 5 rounds. An inspection of 5 rounds fired show no protruding primer and no issues with the base of the brass. I took the 5 cases to my local gunsmith (who did the NO-GO test) and he said they looked great. Any thoughts or comments?
