Hi, I have a 1944 No4 Mk1 that was arsenal refurbished F T R marked.
It looks like improvements made on MK2 where done to this Mk1, in trigger and elevation sights. The stock was repaired… Question…Should I leave the stock as is with the repair because its original to the rifle, or search for a better Or NOS Birch Butt stock. ![]() |

Looks like an arsenal repaired stock, may have been on that rifle for a long time. I'd clean and oil it (BLO or Stand oil), nothing wrong with it.

It would be best to leave it as is. To remove it, you would be removing its history. A factory repair or refurbishment is all part of that rifles history and should be left as such...

How's the receiver marked? It sounds like you might have a Mk1/2? I'd keep the wood its a part of the FTR probably. The world hadn't gotten to "disposable" yet so good repairs were the order of the day. Also agree on the oil. It looks very dry. Get some "RLO" & "Stand oil" from your local art store in the painting section. NOT Home Improvement store rubbish! Small 4~8 oz bottles are more than enough. Rub in several coats of the RLO to moisten, swell & refit the wood from where its probably shrunk, than some "Stand Oil" to finish off.

I'm guessing Birch. Beech has the tell tale "fish scales" grain.

i agree with shamu on the probably wood as well as leaving alone what is as original as that rifle could ever be , what happened to it in its lifetime is basically there , if there was something wrong [cracks or rot] id fix it but if its sound id leave it ,
